George Carroll Obituary

George J. Carroll
George J. Carroll, age 87, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Barbara (Grega) Carroll, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Bridgeport Hospital. George had been a resident of Fairfield for over 58 years. The son of the late George Francis and Catherine (Buckley) Carroll, George was born and educated in Bridgeport, attending St. Augustine's, Bassick High School, and the University of Bridgeport.
George proudly served in the United States Army Counterintelligence. Afterwards, he began his career working at Pitney Bowes, GE Capital, and McKesson & Robbins where he met the love of his life, Barbara. This year, George and Barbara would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 22.
Following retirement, George happily became a driver to many friends and family, providing rides into New York City and all major area airports. He loved the game of golf and proudly coveted a hole-in-one! George was a long-time member of the Gaelic-American Club where he always enjoyed a good plate of fish and chips.
George's favorite hobbies included reading, photography, yard work, and simply sitting in his garage observing the world around him. Most of all, George treasured his morning trips to Pine Creek Deli. He enjoyed his daily conversations with friends who gave him the nickname "The Gentleman". In 2015, George celebrated his 80th birthday at the deli where he proudly received a proclamation from First Selectman of Fairfield naming that day "George J. Carroll Day".
In addition to his loving wife Barbara, George will be deeply missed by his three beloved children, Susan Pinzon and her husband Marco, Michael Carroll and his wife Michelle, and Christopher Carroll and his wife Kristine; five cherished grandchildren, Kaleigh, Connor, Grace, Luke and Amanda; his twin brother, Edward Carroll, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, James, and Cornelius Carroll.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 11 from 4-7 p.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home at 39 South Benson Road in Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church on 149 South Pine Creek Road in Fairfield. Interment will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery.

George Carroll was kind, generous, patient, clever, and talented. He drove members of my family to and from airports for many years and became a friend. He also played an important part of the recording sessions for my Mass in C minor by driving many of the musicians to and from recording sessions in New York City. He became friends with the Fry Street String Quartet. When I gave him a copy of the finished work, he surprised me by taking pictures of our garden in Southport and making a film set to the music from the Ressurexit section of the Credo. It was masterfully done. George was full of wonderful surprises .

Condolences to Barbara. George was indeed a gentleman and a pleasure to know.
