Mr. Glenice Edward Morris: Beloved Family man and Horseman
Glenice Edward "Glen" Morris, 85, of Southbury, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, doing what he loved-prepping his and his wife's garden for the summer season.
All who had the pleasure of knowing Glen will surely remember his quick wit, riveting stories, charitable nature, and iconic humor.
Glen was born on February 20, 1940, in Woodbine, Kentucky-or, as he would say, he was a true "Kentuckatarian." He was the son of the late Vernon Hall Morris and Ada Marie (Nantz) (Wells) Morris. Glen's biological father, James Edward Wells, passed away before he was born; however, Glen remained connected to his Wells family in Kentucky and frequently visited them in his later years. When Glen was just five years old, his mother joined the war effort building airplanes and moved the family to Baltimore, MD, where she met Glen's father, Vernon Hall Morris. Vernon and Ada soon married, and Vernon adopted Glen and his sister, Betty Lou, raising and loving them as his own.
On June 20, 1964, Glen married the love of his life, Carol Ann Regan. The two met at the Waterville Bible Church after attending services there with their families for several years. After Glen took Carol-and her best friend, Bernadette-out for ice cream on their first date, the pair remained by each other's side and happily married for sixty-one years until Glen was called home to be with his Heavenly Father.
Glen was a beloved English teacher for over thirty years where he taught in various local public schools, including: Watertown High School, Laurel Ledge School in Beacon Falls, and both Beardsley School and Warren G. Harding High School in Bridgeport. When he was not making a difference in the lives of his many students, Glen was running a Morgan horse business from his home in Southbury called G.E.M. Morgans which offered hayrides, horse rides, and sleigh rides. G.E.M. Morgans quickly became a local staple. Southburians and folks from all over the state and country shared happy memories singing along to classics and laughing around the campfire after one of Glen's hayrides. In addition to hayrides, Glen's business brought horses to shows and parades and escorted happy couples to their weddings.
Glen raised and cared for countless Morgan horses throughout his lifetime. He went on to drive the first mother-father-son Morgan horse team in history using a revolutionary three-abreast Morgan horse hitch-- a modification of the Russian troika-- that he invented himself, with collars selected and sized by close friends William P. Clarke and Joseph Kriz. Glen was an esteemed member of the Morgan Horse Association. One of the crowning achievements of Glen's later years was receiving a lifetime membership from the Association. He was published several times in The Morgan Horse magazine and was even featured on the cover of Who's Who in Morgandom.
Though horses and working outdoors were Glen's passions, he also embraced the value of a good education. In 1958, Glen graduated from Southbury High School, where he was the Valedictorian of his class and a founding member of the Bullet Hill Chapter of the National Honor Society. He then went on to study at Wheaton College in Illinois before graduating from his alma mater, the University of Connecticut. In the wintertime, you could find Glen glued to the TV, cheering on the UConn Women's Basketball Team to another championship victory!
Besides his loving wife, Carol, Glen is survived by his older sister, Betty Lou Pollock of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by his four children, who continue to make him proud: his son, Morgan Morris, and his partner, Tammie Callahan, of Waterbury, CT; and his three daughters, Cynthia Morris-Kukoski and her husband, Stanley, of Fredericksburg, VA; Elizabeth SantaMaria and her husband, David, of Middlebury, CT; and Rebecca Cavallaro and her husband, Ed, of Middlebury, CT. He also leaves behind his three grandchildren, whom he described as the "lights of his life": Christian SantaMaria of Washington, DC; Sarah Cavallaro of New Haven, CT; and Evan Cavallaro of Middlebury, CT. Glen is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends-all of whom he loved dearly.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 10, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home (235 Main St N, Southbury), and a funeral service will be held on Friday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Epiphany (262 Main St N, Southbury). Burial will follow in New North Cemetery in Woodbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Operation Smile or Guardians Farm LLC in his memory.
