Hans Fuchs Obituary

Fuchs, Hans M.
Hans Martin Fuchs, 73, died unexpectedly December 24, 2015 after falling in his Providence, RI home. He was surrounded by family and at peace when he passed.
Martin was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1942 to Professor Walther Peter Fuchs and Marianne Fuchs (Kraemer). After earning an MD/PhD from the University of Heidelberg in 1967/68, he followed his beloved Ina to the United States. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Norwalk Hospital (Connecticut) in 1976, and practiced there until retiring in 2008.
A "gentleman of the old school", Martin cared deeply for his patients, treating not only illnesses but the entire patient and family with extraordinary integrity, kindness, and compassion. He found great joy in music, religion, literature, cooking, and - most of all - his family.
He is survived by his wife Ina (Taeger), sons Tom (wife Helen), Peter (wife Christine), Andrew (wife Stacie) and his daughter Karin. He also leaves six beloved grandchildren, a sister Dorothea Quitmann, brother Ulrich and many nieces and nephews.
Services are at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Warwick, RI at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23; burial will be private.
Comments may be left at Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home (www.mkds.com). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.theizzyfoundation.org.

We were trainees together at Norwalk Hospital in 1970 and 1971. I met him by chance about 8 years ago in a small shop in Lenox Massachusetts and he recognized me after forty years.! We had many wonderful times together in Norwalk. So sad to hear of his passing. As I recall our interactions at the start of our careers in Medicine, I thought that if I am ever sick, I would want someone of Martin's caliber and disposition to care for me. So very sad to hear, belatedly, of Martin's passing. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Fuchs saved my life with recognizing
giardia from Russia...decades ago. He cared for my husband and he was dear to both of us. At the Norwalk hospital
I was reading Bonhoeffer and he told of his parents relationship with the family. He was a rare man. Jackie

Oh my! So very sad to hear. I worked with Dr. Fuchs at GIMA for many years. I think those years were the best of my life. We were a family.

Dr. Fuchs was so caring. My husband passed away over a Labor Day weekend and Dr. Fuchs came to my home at least three times over the weekend. I am so appreciative of his help then and many other times over the years. Rest in peace, my friend. Carolyn Schwab
