Harry Twiss Obituary

Twiss, Harry N.
Harry Neil Twiss, much beloved husband of Cynthia (Tabaka) Twiss, passed away with grace and dignity on Saturday, October 24, 2015 in his home. Harry was born August 11, 1934 in Greenwich, CT to the late Mary Margaret Tief and Neil Twiss and was predeceased by his sister June and niece Heather.
Harry's was a life well-lived. He was an Aviation Technician attached to the Naval Airborne Early Warning Squadron and a tennis professional at yacht clubs in New York. He received his teaching and administrative degrees from SCSU and UB. A dedicated educator, Harry taught Science at the elementary and middle school levels and was an elementary school administrator at Center School, Long Hill and Tashua during his 35 years in the Trumbull Public Schools, retiring in 1995. He particularly loved teaching his students how to solve problems using real life tasks. Not one to sit back in retirement, Harry decided he wanted to learn to fly and achieved his dream when he passed his solo flying test. An avid windsurfer who loved to sail, Harry turned his sights to wooden boat building, not from kits but from plans. His first boat, a Sparkman & Stephens BlueJay, built with his friend George, was followed by the dinghy Cabin Boy and culminated with his pride and joy, the 16 foot Catboat, Little One, which he sailed in Long Island Sound. In addition to sailing, Harry continued his tennis career in a league in Milford.
One of Harry's friends described him as a man who was comfortable to be with, accepting, caring and considerate, always patient and kind, a true gentleman; not a bad legacy. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his sister Patty (Paul) of Sproughton, UK; his daughters: Sandra Logan (Chris) of Seymour, Sharon McDonald (Bob) of Bolton, MA, Karen Twiss of New Hartford, seven grandchildren, three nephews, two sisters-in law, a brother-in-law and his buddy Max.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life on Saturday, November 7, 2015 in his home in Milford, CT between the hours of 1:00 and 4:00. Should anyone wish to make a donation in his memory, the family would appreciate them being made to either: Rocking the Boat, 812 Edgewater Road, Bronx, NY 10474, Att: Molly Fitzgerald, with a notation that it is in Harry's memory or to the Connecticut Food Bank.

Cindy, I did not know that Harry had passed. I only knew him for the most part through you. I met him several times and you and he were at my daughter´s wedding. I know you loved him very much and all will miss his kind spirit.
I know I am late, but I hope you forgive my tardiness.

`May the wind under his wings take him to where the sun sails and the moonwalks´

Mr Twiss had to have been my favorite and most influential teacher in my 12 years in Trumbull schools. He made science very interesting with all of his projects. And he lifted me up when I needed. I wish I knew before now of his passing.

Mr. Twiss was my favorite teacher ever. In 1966 as a 5th grader, he made me (and probably most of his students) feel respected and that I was a person who could be trusted to do the right thing. I have thought of him over the years but did not know he died until today. The world lost a great man.

My prayers are with all of you. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Twiss as a most engaging and supportive 5th grade teacher at Center School in 1969. He encouraged my girlfriends and I to make something out of our crazy ideas and expected us to succeed. I will always remember him as a top educator with compassion. Peace be with you.

My condolences to the family for the loss of a wonderful man.

Mr. Twiss was the most incredible teacher I ever had. In 4th and 5th grade he had us building carbon microphones, loudspeakers, crystal radios, electric motors and crude phonographs.

He put in extra effort to make science fun, and he was gifted.

I spoke about him at length during Shelton's teacher convocation a couple years ago because he was an exemplary teacher who made a difference in my life.

Mr. Twiss was an administrator when I was in grade school in Trumbull. He was always teaching however. I remember the time that he and I built a working microphone using a medicine bottle cap, some oak tag paper and and old battery. The man was McGuyver. RIP.
