Austrian, Herman
Herman Austrian, M.D., age 88 of Fairfield passed away peacefully at home on Sunday November 18, 2012. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Paul and Edith Austrian. Herman served his country proudly during World War II in the U.S. Navy. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he pursued his undergraduate degree through the GI Bill, and received his B.A. from New York University. He studied Medicine in Zurich and Paris, and received his M.D. from the University of Zurich. He completed his residency and internship at Bridgeport Hospital, and established a medical practice in Trumbull with Bernard J. Sherlip, M.D. in 1955. Herman retired from practice in 1995. Herman was also an accomplished artist, working in oil paint and in sculpture. His work was featured in several issues of Connecticut Medicine, The Journal of the Connecticut State Medical Society. Herman was a loving husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather, and will be sorely missed by all. Survivors include his children Donald J. Austrian, M.D. and his wife Hyla Austrian of Oxford, and Sandra M. Austrian of New London; his stepchildren Joanne Hus and her husband Philip West of Fairfield, Jennifer H. Duckworth and her husband William Duckworth of Woodbury, and Juli R. Friedlander and her husband Geoff Friedlander of Cornwall, New York; former wife Phyllis Rogolsky of New London; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Jan Austrian; his siblings Ceil Silver, Sol Austrian, M.D., and Shirley Leed; and his son Kenneth. A memorial service will be held at Spear Miller Funeral Home on Monday, November 26 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation.
