James Flaherty Obituary

James Paul Flaherty
James Paul Flaherty passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024. He was 77 years old.
He is now in Heaven with his wife of almost 50 years, Jane Hammond Flaherty. Jane passed in 2019. James was an only child, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, to Sylvester and Sadie Flaherty. A scholarship student to Fordham University at Rose Hill, he went on to marry the girl he fell in love with in high school, his Jane. After a first date at a Mets game, they went on to have an extraordinary life together, living in Europe and seeing the world. James ran banks and had businesses in multiple countries. He was very successful, but what gave him the most joy was his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Stimpson, her husband, John, and their children, Matthew, Henry, and Sophie; his daughter, Margaret Holmgren, her husband, Andrew, and their children, Aidan, Owen, and William; his son, Kevin Flaherty, his wife Tori, and their children, Seamus and Rory; and his son, Brian Flaherty, and his children, Olive and James.
A wonderfully charitable man, James made a point of putting education first, and established scholarships at Fordham University and at his high school in Brooklyn. He was a man of letters first and foremost. He taught his children to see the world, be open to all, and be creative. He and Jane encouraged them to love God, love family, and take care of others.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a memorial contribution to the Jane M. Flaherty Scholarship Fund at Fordham University, c/o Roger A. Milici, Fordham University, Joseph A Martino Hall, 45 Columbus Avenue, 8th Floor, New York N.Y. 10023. The Funeral Mass will take place Monday, August 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church at Fordham University at Rose Hill, 2691 Southern Boulevard, Bronx, NY (campus main gate). I was a former client, then employee of Jim´s in London (Cannon Capital) and latterly a business partner at Porthaven based in Windsor. In spite of my original sense of awe when encountering the man, I can only say how much I admired and respected Jim for many years; he was a tough but fair businessman and a genuine source of inspiration, wisdom and humour to us junior colleagues. I got to meet Jane and some of the wider Flaherty clan at Gleneagles, Scotland (where we held the occasional board meeting) and my wife, young son and I were honoured to be invited to dinner with Jim and Jane when we visited New York. I was deeply saddened to hear of both Jim and Jane´s passing and know they are now reunited in peace. I shall never forget Jim for being an important and positive influence on my own career. Rest in Peace.

Jim was a wonderful person. Loving, kind & generous. His love of Jane was always present when we would see him. The world needs more people like this beautiful couple. My heartfelt condolences to the Flaherty Family.
