James Hubbard Obituary

James D. Hubbard Sr.
James D. Hubbard Sr., age 91, unexpectedly entered eternal rest in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Griffin Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Della Ann Closson Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard was born in Bridgeport on September 1, 1933, son of the late Francis R. Hubbard Sr. and Irene Dooley Hubbard. He was a graduate of Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport and later attended Bridgeport Engineering Institute. A proud veteran, he honorably served in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division during Korea. Jim was employed as a supervisor in the Engineering Department at Sikorsky Aircraft for forty years, until his retirement in 1996. He was a devout communicant of the Church of the Assumption in Ansonia where he served as an Extraordinary Minister, member of the Parish Council, chairman of the Altar Guild, co-chairman of the Men's Retreat League, Altar Server at funerals, and member and former recording secretary of the Knights of Columbus Council #23 at Assumption Church. For his dedication and service to the Church of the Assumption, he was awarded the prestigious St. Joseph Medal of Appreciation from the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2019. He was also a member of Holy Rosary Church Men's Club and enjoyed playing in the bocce league, member of Ansonia Senior Center, Valley Senior Services Council and Caregivers and member and former officer and Chaplain of American Legion Post #24. In 2017, he was honored as "Chaplain of the Year." Jim was the former Treasurer of the Ansonia Democratic Town Committee, former chairman of the Commission for the Elderly in Ansonia and volunteer at Griffin Hospital and the American Red Cross. Above all, in Jim's words, "my greatest accomplishment was raising six loving sons with my loving wife Della." He leaves to cherish his memory, sons, James Hubbard Jr. (Ann Marie) of St. Augustine, FL, Martin Hubbard Sr. (Barbara) of Milford, Dennis Hubbard (Linda) of Ansonia, Terence Hubbard Sr. (Laura) of Sebastian, FL, and Jonathan Hubbard Sr. (Cindy) of Ansonia, daughter-in-law, Linda M. Hubbard of Ansonia, sister-in-law Earla Montani of Monroe, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Della Ann, he was predeceased by his son, Kelly E. Hubbard Sr., grandson, Kelly "KJ" E. Hubbard Jr., brother, Francis R. Hubbard Jr. sisters, Irene Murphy, and Nancy Piorek and special friend of eleven years Grace Forbes. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family and pay their respects on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Thursday, his funeral will take place at 10:00 a.m. (please meet directly) at the Church of the Assumption, 61 North Cliff Street in Ansonia for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment with United States Army military honors will immediately follow in Mount Saint Peter Mausoleum in Derby. In loving memory of a wonderful person. Growing up across the street from your family is and always will be the fondest of memories!! Always went to sit with him for a "chat" when I was home~it was always a pleasure. There is a significant message throughout these messages from everyone, and that is what a wonderful & kind person he was...everyone had the same thing to say about him.

Please accept my deepest condolences for a wonderful and kind man. I had the pleasure of knowing Jim since becoming Music Director/Organist at Assumption in 1997. He never, ever had an unkind word about anyone. He assisted every year with the recitation of the Rosary, and assisted by serving and preparing the altar, sometimes reading, at almost every funeral. Jim was a pillar of Assumption and I am honored to have known such a beautiful human being. I am a better person for having known Jim. God bless his family at this time.

My sincere sympathy to all Jim's family. He was a special man and a good friend to my husband in the Knights of Columbus. He along with a couple of others visited with my husband a couple of days before Bill passed. Jim was always a caring, sweet gentleman. He always stopped to say hello to me at mass and when we saw each other at the Ansonia Senior Center. He will be greatly missed by many people.

My deepest condolences to all of "The Hubbard Boys" and their families. Your Dad ("Mr. Hubs" as I affectionately referred to him for over 50 years) was one of the men I admired most outside of my own father. He was one of the most consistently nice and happy people I have ever known, with a wonderful sense of humor. I always enjoyed just being around him, my father and the other grown-ups at family get-togethers and picnics when we were kids. I have especially fond memories of all of us Hubbard/Dreher boys going with our fathers to the Waterbury Pirates baseball games on 10 cent beer nights, and watch them get slowly hammered, then drive us all home in the station wagons, with no seat belts no less!

Helping them sell raffle tickets for the Assumption School/Church car raffle was also a lot of fun and a great memory. I miss those days guys, and I miss each of you and the times our families spent together, and I will sincerely miss your father, "Mr. Hubs"...I will never forget him.

I am very sorry I cannot attend his services in person this week, but please KNOW that I am there in spirit, supporting all of you and bidding him a fond farewell.

I am so very saddened and heartbroken to learn of the passing of my beloved Uncle Jim. We spoke on the telephone the previous week. Uncle Jim was a shining example of a faith-filled gentleman who loved his family and always gave back to the community. I will miss his hearty laughs, his outstanding singing voice, and his love of his extended family. But, most of all, I will miss our regular conversations on the telephone. Uncle Jim is now in heaven and reunited with Aunt Dell. No finer gentleman ever walked this Earth.

Without a doubt, one of the nicest people I had the pleasure to know. I’ve known your father and your entire family for a very long time and have many fond memories of days gone by too quickly. He will surely be missed. Take comfort in knowing his life was a life well lived, and he will be remembered by so many people. My sincere condolences to each and every one of you. Sending hugs.
