James Kallstrom Obituary

James Keith Kallstrom
James Keith Kallstrom, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, and a decorated US Marine and FBI Agent, died July 3 at the age of 78 at his home in Fairfield, Connecticut.
His was a life defined by service: to his family, his country, and to the children of Marines and law enforcement personnel whose parents paid the ultimate price in defending us. Known as Jim or Jimmy to his many friends, he was the first person you'd call if you were in trouble. He was also the last person you'd want to see if you were a terrorist or mafiosi intent on causing it.
He was—to his fellow Americans but above all to his family—a hero.
In 1996, an anxious nation looked to Jim for answers in the wake of the tragic crash of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island. As the Assistant Director in charge of the FBI's flagship New York office, Jim led a sprawling 16-month investigation that the Washington Post described as "one of the most expansive inquiries in airline history." During those uncertain months, Jim was a constant presence beaming into living rooms across America, demonstrating the direct, plainspoken leadership style that won him the admiration and loyalty of so many of his fellow agents.
Jim's leadership and love of country was honed in the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1966-1969, seeing extensive combat with the 1st battalion, 3rd Marines in Vietnam in 1967. When he returned home, a chance meeting set him on the path to becoming an FBI special agent, beginning with a 1971 posting in the Baltimore field office. Across a distinguished 27-year career, Jim pioneered some of the bureau's most innovative surveillance practices. His technical wizardry was so renowned that some colleagues took to calling him "Q" after the fictional special agent who made clever spy gadgets for James Bond. A 1996 New York Times story said Jim's crimefighting techniques played "a critical role in the arrests of every major organized crime leader and terrorist in New York in the last 20 years, including those involved with the World Trade Center bombing in 1993."
Jim retired from the FBI in 1997, and worked in the private sector before once again answering the call to serve. After 9/11, then New York Governor George Pataki appointed him to lead a new state public security office responsible for preventing future terrorist attacks.
Jim was never much of a golfer and in retirement he threw himself into the Marine Corps and Law Enforcement Foundation(MCLEF) that he helped found in 1995 with several of his Marine brothers, to provides educational and other humanitarian benefits to children who had lost a parent in service. He served as MCLEF's Chairman of the Board until his passing, helping to raise over $84 million for over 4,400 recipients since the charity's inception.
James Keith Kallstrom was born in Worcester, MA on May 6, 1943 to Todd, a big band trumpeter and Edna, a registered nurse. He has two siblings: Roger Kallstrom of South
Chatham, MA and Lynn Cangelosi of Worcester, MA. Jim spent summers in his youth on the beaches of Cape Cod and eventually made his way back in retirement, finding a dream home on beautiful Onset Bay. If you walked on to the back deck, you would find a flagpole with The Stars and Stripes on top and two Marine Corps flags right below it. And underneath those flags, you would find Jim at his happiest:
At home, surrounded by his devoted wife of 50 years Sue, his daughters Kristel and Erika, his grandchildren, and the family and friends who loved him so much.
In remembrance of Jim's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to support either the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation at www.mc-lef.org or the work of Dr. Francine Foss at Yale Cancer Center at giving.yale.edu/supportMedicineOther or via check to Yale Cancer Center, PO Box 7611, New Haven, CT 06519-0611. Jim´s family,
I think of Jim often sharing old conversations with individuals who knew him. He left a beautiful impression on many individuals on road of life. Amazingly one individual noticed my license plate which opened up a conversation which led to Jim. He knew Jim from USMC and told me it was an honor to have know him asking me of my connection. We talked and then prayed for Jim in parking lot for him and family. Always the best.
Blessings, Ed

Jim´s family ,
I was at early mass today reflecting upon friends who are no longer with us on this road of life. I think of Jim often a true servant leader.
I had been talking to a friend recent about Jim a humble leader who had integrity which is so lacking in our leadership across this nation today. I had the honor to know him including having a few animated conversations filled with wisdom.
I always appreciated his kindness looking out for one of our daughters who was guest at his home over the years.

Many blessings to his lovely family who today celebrate a wonderful man who was a terrific father and husband .

I had my career in the Ct. commercial nuclear power business and we had a hero, now passed, Harold Denton, for his Three Mile Island accident response role. The FBI´s hero is Jim. I will never forget his name even though we´ve never met, based on my recollections of the very fine and compassionate work he lead following the TWA 800 tragedy.

I am saddened to hear of his passing

I think of Jim often being such a gracious genuine man. We got to know each other on the road of life. He didn´t believe in illusions or idolatry knowing that this life would end one day. He knew that God´s loving arms would greet him one day. I´m firm in believing God´s love is keeping him busy radiating God´s glory in ways to us. Jim knew that life here is finite not infinite that eternal life was his North Star. I´m glad our paths crossed and may his loving children be at peace knowing how blessed this man was on their life

What a terrific person a gentle giant who walked with humility. He was a servant leader to our nation no ego No vanity just trying to make life a better place. Our leadership of our nation could learn a lot from such a man who put human kindness , integrity and humility as his North Star not selfish vanity.
I would comment one other characteristic Jim was a servant leader for Jesus Christ´s purpose in his life.
He leaves behind a wonderful legacy to his entire family

I met James in law enforcement circles. He was not forgettable. Aside from his many qualities professionally, he was decency personifed. A person you could count on. I recall a line in a war movie where a commander was told that a volunteer officer died in action. His response was "where do we get such men?" James Kallstrom was one of those rare men.

Seeing James Kallstrom remembered, a year after his passing, by his family, friends, colleagues, and fellow admirers shows honorable respect for this true gentleman, an Awarded Medals Patriot Marine, and the FBI Special Agent in Charge of the New York City Flagship Office. Jim was truly an American Hero. I was proud and honored to meet, hear and see Jim give a eulogy for, my friend, and his, the former FBI Chief of Counter-Terrorism, in Washington, D.C, and New York City, John Patrick O'Neill. John sacrificed his life in the World Trade Center, on 9/11, as Chief of Security for the WTC. A new job he had taken just days after retiring from the FBI and before the attack. John went back in after he managed to escape. He went back in to save lives when the buildings' collapse eventually took his own life. His body was found 10 days later in the WTC rubble, on Liberty Steet. I find that an ironic, yet an appropriate name for a street on which John P. O'Neill's remains were to be found. A retired ACFD, NJ Firefighter, myself, gives me respect for what John O'Neill did on that horrific day. John's Funeral Mass was at the glorious, Medevial Sculptured, Saint Nicolas of Tolentine Church, in Atlantic City, NJ, in September 2001. Saint Nick's, as we call it in AC, NJ, was John's childhood Parish where he was an Alter Boy. Jim Kallstrom gave an illustrious and respectful eulogy for our friend and his former colleague, John P. O'Neill. He was an expert orator, in addition to all his other talents and God-given attributes. Please accept my sympathies, Sue, Kristel, Erika, Roger, Lynn, and the rest of Jim's family, friends, and colleagues, again, a year later. May James Kallstrom Always Rest In The Peace Of Our Lord's Eternal Heaven. Semper Fidelis, soldier of God.

Blessings to Jim's family today July 03,
Jim's name and legacy continues on road of life . I give you today an event while driving my car in Lewes , Delaware . One day a gentleman approaches me on way home from mass. He noticed my Marine ( USMC ) Foindation plate on car. He asked me how I have it. I told hom was given to me directly by Jim to my daughter Meghan who had attended the Marine ball in NYC with his daughter Erika. He was in shock seening the plate and how I received it. The gentleman knew Jim from journey of life crossing paths . The gentleman was Burt Timmons 1st Sgt, USMC( RET). We spoke several times about Jim at times realling a genuine man.
We acknowleged Jim's life and joined in a short prayer for the man and his family . Meeting Burt Timmons that day was a Divine Appointment to remember a friend and a child of GOD. Blessings to family and dear friends, Ed

When I read the passing of Jim into God's loving arms it caught my attention. I knew Jim just in a tangential way. The first time at reception of incoming freshmen at Villanova University where our Meghan daughter attended with his daughter Erika. He was the real deal . Jim was a genuine man who walked with humility filled with strength. He was a servant leader which is rare commodity that stood out in a world of big egos. Jim was a solid genuine person and glad we met on road of life.

I got to know Erika during that time upon her visits to her home . Jim would call me to confirm her transportation when taking the train back to her home in Ct. Jim then returned that comforting call when our daughter Meghan was with him.

Jim was a terrific loving protective dad and too those under his care.

The second was communicating with Jim during the events of September 11. Jim was I believe retired from FBI now working at MBNA in Delaware.

I told him that our Nation would be reaching out to him shorty. He confirmed that to me and the rest historically is know to us. The conversation ended with humility and seeking God's wisdom with our prayers upon our Nation and our families . Jim's directness filled with genuine love for family and nation was reality in motion. I respected a terrific man ,so thank you for sharing the journey with me and our country.

I believe that Jim's last breath in this life was his first breath in front of God's loving arms . God welcomed home one of HIS children.

I was an FMF Corpsman and served in Vietnam with Lt. Kallstrom. He was a true leader and a great Marine. I can recall when he used to complain about the Navy, he would curse those "Anchor Clankers" and "Swabies" then look at me and say, "Don't mean you, Doc". He will be missed.

I met him only once at an NYPD joint seminar. There was an aura of genuineness about him. If you wanted a role model for an FBI agent it was him. I watched him thru the years and admired him. He was one of a kind. And that reference is hard to come by in a lifetime. He left us too soon.

I met Mr. Kallstrom about 21 years ago in an elevator at a company I worked for in Boston. He was there doing some consulting work. We had no more than a 2 minute interaction but it is one that will always stick with me. I was an entry-level employee just out of college and I knew Jim was a big deal based on the other executives he got in the elevator with. As soon as he stepped in that elevator he greeted me like he had known me my whole life. He smiled, said hello and asked me how I was.
Meanwhile, the executives he was with and who I worked with had never even looked at me in the months I worked at the company. He even joked with me about how president of the company should loosen up a bit. It was an amazing lesson in humility and treating people as though they were your equals no matter what level or pay grade they are at. It was 21 years ago and I remember it as though it were yesterday. It was only months later that I saw him on tv and discovered who he was which made me appreciate his kindness even more. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I wish I had bumped into him one more time to tell him what an impact that simple interaction had on me. I can only imagine how wonderful a person he was with his family and friends if he were as kind as he was to me, a perfect stranger, sharing an elevator ride. My condolences to all of you who knew him best.

I never had the honor of meeting Jim Kallstrom, but knew his face immediately from watching The FBI Files. When I saw his face in the newspaper, it felt like I was looking at the face of an old friend. His TV appearances suggested him to be an honorable man of great integrity. His obituary reflects my sense of what a truly great man he was. His passing is a terrible loss for his family and numerous friends. My sincere condolences to all who knew and loved him. How wonderful to have had him in your lives. The love and memories you share together will help you all to celebrate the good life he lived.

Deepest condolences to Assistant Director Kallstrom's family. I never met him, but recall listening intently to his wisdom and insight when he would be interviewed by Sean Hannity or other hosts on FOX News. His full interview with Maria Bartiromo on her Sunday Morning Futures program in March 2018 revealed to me what a knowledgeable, patriotic and courageous FBI man he was. On a personal note, I never realized this great patriot had Worcester roots! Further, my late Father was a professional tenor saxophonist from Paxton and Worcester and probably knew of Mr. Kallstrom's Dad, Todd, a trumpeter. It is truly sad to lose such a gifted and patriotic crime fighter in this day and age, but Mr. Kallstrom's memory will nonetheless serve to inspire many others to join the cause and so serve with honor and distinction. May many warm memories and God's eternal love be with you all now and in the time to come. God Bless and Rest in Peace, Mr. Kallstrom.

Kallstrom in the last years of his FBI career only to work with again years´ later after the tragic events of 911 where he shared his vast experience, knowledge and patriotism with municipal law enforcement agencies to help them devised strategies that would effectively deal with this new public safety challenge. Working with him was truly inspirational. Known as a strong leader, I remember him also to be very cordial and encouraging. I was sad to hear he had passed away. God bless him.....
