John Balascak

BALASCAK John Balascak, age 88, a longtime resident of Black Rock section of Bridgeport, devoted husband of the late Helen Sherbaty Balascak, passed away on November 18, 2008 at home with his family by his side. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Mary Louise Bertilson, of Black Rock, Christine Pofok, and her husband, Paul, of Huntington; one brother, Michael Balascak, and his wife, Shirley, of Milford; grandchildren, John Bertilson, of Alaska, Elise Mathias and Richard Brooks, of Idaho, Mark and Heather Pofok, of Oxford, Cassandra and Paul Zint, of Huntington, Kimberly and Geoff Lanier, of Boston, Mass.; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Mathias, Madison Lanier, Gabriella and Paul Zint, Elena Pofok; several nieces and nephews. A veteran of the United States Army during World War II, John Proudly served in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he worked at Bridgeport Brass Company for 11 years, and Heppenstall Corporation for 30 years before retiring. A talented landscaper, he created and operated his own lawn service for a number of years. In addition to being dedicated to his late wife and family, John was a devout Catholic, regularly attending St. Ann Church, where he was a member of the Father's Club. He served as a president, vice president, and treasurer for the local US Steel Union, and was a member of the VFW Post 9460, in Stratford. John loved world traveling, singing, Cabinet making, and his morning walks around St. Mary's by the Sea. Funeral services will be held on Friday 845 AM in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center, and 930 AM in St. Ann Church.
