John Doherty Obituary

John "Jack" W. Doherty
John "Jack" W. Doherty, age 89, of Milford, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 29, 2017 with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of the late Joan (Kalakay) Doherty.
Jack was born in Bridgeport to the late Martin T. and Mary (Dowling) Doherty. He had been a Bridgeport resident for 69 years prior to moving to Milford.
Mr. Doherty was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy; serving during World War II and extending during the Korean War. His service in the Armed Forces was one of the most rewarding experiences of his early life and the source of many of his stories and adventures. A true patriot through and through, he had a deep love for our country and respect for the flag under which he proudly served.
Jack will be remembered for his tireless work ethic - making his civilian career within the transportation industry with Hartford Dispatch and Holmes Transportation, the latter of which he retired from. After Holmes, he embarked on a second career with the Trumbull Board of Education which he also retired from after many years of service as a custodian.
Jack was known to all as a strong man who laughed easily and loved nothing more than time spent with his beloved family and friends who felt like family, most notably the Dortenzios.
Along with his sweetheart Joan, Jack enjoyed traveling and they made many wonderful memories exploring the world together. Jack and Joan passionately rooted for the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Women's Basketball teams - as well as any sport or endeavor that their precious grandchildren found themselves involved in.
A lover of animals, Jack always had a soft spot for pets of his own throughout the years and those of his children and grandchildren as well.
The family would like to acknowledge Emmanuel, Ebelle and Wilma for the extraordinary care and compassion they showed to Jack during his illness and also the entire Vitas staff for their support.
He is survived by two beloved children, Linda Muttitt and her husband, Michael W., of Orange and John S. Doherty and his wife, Donna, of Washington Depot; four loving grandchildren, Kelly (Joshua) Luf, Michael S. (Julia) Muttitt, Diana L. (James) Foley and Kaitlin "Katie" Muttitt; three great-grandchildren, Rowan Alice Luf, Ethan Patrick Foley and Jack Philip Muttitt; his sister-in-law, Faye Doherty of California and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Martin Doherty and his wife, Frances; James Doherty and wife, Barbara; and Edward Doherty; and sister, Betty Doherty.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Mary Church, 75 Gulf Street, Milford with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors in St. John Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to either Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth St. NW, Washington, DC 20006-3517 (pva.org) or National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131(parkinsons.org).
