Rev. John Giannattasio
Rev. John Giannattasio, age 96, of Trumbull, CT, passed away on February 3rd, 2024 in Trumbull, CT, surrounded by his loving family.
Rev. John Giannattasio was born in Bridgeport, CT to James Giannattasio and Anna Falivene Giannattasio on September 28, 1927. As a young lad, John enthusiastically sold newspapers in the streets and businesses of Bridgeport. He went to school at Central High School, Bridgeport. He married Loretta Marion Wendschlag on August 14, 1954 in Oakland, CA. He graduated from University of Valley Forge, aka Southern New England Bible Institute.
John worked as a Minister/Evangelist/Missionary/Pastor with The Assemblies of God for 80 years. He was involved in missionary trips to Ghana, West Africa, and Madras, India, and preached as an evangelist throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. In 1981, he became the Senior Pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, 1287 Park Ave., Bridgeport, CT, and faithfully served for over 42 years, preaching his last sermon in December of 2023. Through the years, he had a burden for and took great delight in ministering to Pivot Ministries, Teen Challenge, Time For a Change and Hosanna Ministries. He truly had a heart for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost souls in Bridgeport and around the world.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and served in the Navy, earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Rev. John Giannattasio is preceded in death by his father, James Giannattasio, his mother, Anna Falivene Giannattasio, brothers: Anthony, Joe, and Jerry Giannattasio, sisters: Florence Loveridge and Molly Corcoran and grandson, John-Anthony Charles Compton.
Rev. John Giannattasio is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Giannattasio, his dedicated daughter, Virdene Compton and her husband, Charles Compton, loving granddaughter, Alysha Compton-Deleon and her husband, Christian Deleon, great-grandchildren, Jacob Anthony Compton and Kara Faith Compton-Deleon, along with nieces, nephews and several of cousins.
A Wake will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher Funeral Home, 315 Monroe Tpke., Monroe, CT.
Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 to 11 a.m., followed by funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 9th, 2024 at Spadaccino Funeral Home in Monroe, CT, with the Rev. Nick Fatato, Southern New England District Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport.
In lieu of flowers, it was Pastor John's wish that memorials be given to the Giannattasio Charitable Remainder Trust, PO Box 9058, Bridgeport, CT 06601, to be designated for missionary work for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
