John Schmidlin Obituary

SCHMIDLIN John A. Schmidlin, age 89, of Bridgeport, died on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at St. Joseph Manor. Born in Bridgeport, on April 21, 1916, he was a son of the late Albert and Mabel Breene Schmidlin and a lifelong city resident. A U.S. Army veteran, he served with the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II. He was a firefighter with the city of Bridgeport for 47 years, retiring as the fire chief. Mr. Schmidlin was a member of B.A.R.F. and the Holy Name Society at St. Patrick Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Marie Santossio Schmidlin; and three sisters, Mildred Redman, Ellen Aubin and Catherine Collimore. Survivors include a son, Gary Schmidlin and his wife, Sandra, of Shelton; two daughters, Cynthia Schmidlin of Leesburg, Va. and Sheri Turechek and her husband, David, of Shelton; a brother, Harold Schmidlin of Bridgeport, Ind; three grandchildren, Luke, Bonnie and Zachary whom he truly enjoyed spending time with; as well as many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Monday, January 30, 2006 at 9 a.m. from the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull and at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, Bridgeport for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment with military honors will follow in the Garden Mausoleum of St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Manor, 6448 Main Street, Trumbull. I have known John since 1947,when we worked together at Engine and Truck #6, Bridgeport Fire Dept. He was then the driver of truck #6 and I was on engine#6. We were close friends all the while. John was a great fireman and a great chief.

My condolences to the family.Sorry to read about the lost of Chief schmidlin.Our paths crossed over the years many times. I was a neighbor many years ago when growing up on Wells St. We both served the City of Bpt. I was a Police officer and did traffic control at many fires that we were assigned to.
