A great guy...a patriot who served his country proudly. It is nothing less than a blessing to say that "I knew Joey Steele".

Sheena & Joe's children and grandchildren
Jim Flowers Lieutenant Commander USN Retired here. I just received the news of Joe's passing. For his children your dad was like a big brother to me in 1965 when I was a Seaman apprentice on the USS Hunley in Holy Loch. He initated me as a Chief again in the Holy Loch, then we served together when he was Warrant and I was a Ltjg again in the Holy Loch. I will miss your husband Sheena and your dad and grandfather children. He was a mentor to me, a big brother and many many of us Holy Loch sailors will never forget Joe Steele, his professionalism, Patriotism, and Leadership and I won't forget his emails to me over the past few years expressing his trust in God so I know I'll see Joe Steele again in Heaven. God Bless you Sheena.

I recall standing watch with you, when you were a Chief on the Fulton. You were a leader and a friend. May you rest in peace.

To the Steele Family:
As a fellow "villager" growing up in Seaside during the 50' & 60's, I can recall the calming demeanor of a 'gentle-man' we affectionately knew as "Joey"....so as not to confuse jr. with sr. We were all 'family' back then.. with moms & dads keeping watch over, as well as feeling responsible for, everyone else's children; beside their own. It was a privilege to know someone like Joey and I pray that God will comfort his family during this difficult period.

The Steele Family,
For those of us who were fortunate enough to have grown up in Seaside Village during the 50’s and 60’s, many lifetime friendships developed out of an abundance of shared values, beliefs and experiences. Although the passing years have put distance between many of us, our intense loyalty to one another can never be extinguished. We carry through our lives a vestige of each other. I will forever remember Joe as the “real deal” – a man’s man. As someone older than me by a few years, Joe was someone I looked up to in my early days. Despite the age difference and his preeminence around Bridgeport’s South End, he was never dismissive of us younger “Village” kids. Joe was a selfless, caring, and giving person. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

Uncle Joe, and yes you were correct, the Uncle should be spelt with a capital U when we wrote your name. We will miss you little laugh when you heard our voice on the telephone, and I will really miss all your wonderful emails.
But most of all we will miss a fine big man whom we had been blessed to have as our uncle.

The Steele Family,
I work with Dr. McIvor and I met Mr. Steel at WCMC when he would stop in to pick up one of the grand-children. I could see the love and joy in his eyes for them. These are the times when no words can console a painful heart. Hold on to your beautiful memories and he will always be with you. We will keep your family in our prayers.
