Joseph Vaccarella Obituary

Joseph Paul Vaccarella
Joseph Paul Vaccarella, affectionately known as "Joe the Barber", of Fairfield, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024, at the age of 88. Born and raised in West Rutland, Vermont, he was the son of Leonardo and Liboria DiGangi Vaccarella.
Growing up in central Vermont, Joe attended West Rutland High School and was a standout athlete. He played varsity football and basketball and was both the starting quarterback and point guard. As a boy, Joe was active in his local Catholic Church. This commitment to his faith carried on throughout his adult life. Upon his graduation in 1954, Joe left West Rutland to join the United States Navy. He was very proud of his service, especially being a member of the crew of the heralded USS New Jersey battleship. Joe was honorably discharged 4 years after joining the service, but never lost his connection to the Navy. He often participated in the Fairfield Memorial Day Parade and wore his USS New Jersey hat with pride.
Upon completion of his service, Joe returned to New England, but not to his home state of Vermont. During his tenure in the Navy, Joe married his high school sweetheart, Betty. Betty's family had moved south to Connecticut and when Joe left the service, he came to Fairfield to reunite with the love of his life. To support his young family, Joe began work as a barber in town. Not only did the Navy shape him as a young man, but it also taught him the skill that he would fine tune and master over a 62-year career. Joe became his own boss when he was fortunate enough to purchase the shop he had begun working in years earlier, Barber Serville. With Joe's barber chair easily visible through the shop window and a constant smile on his face, he became best known for his moniker, Joe the Barber. He was a fixture on the Post Road in Fairfield for over six decades. Passersby knew not only could they stop in for a great haircut but also a laugh, a story, and sometimes even a cocktail.
When Joe wasn't at the shop, you could be sure to find him gallivanting around town. He never turned down an invite to grab a bite to eat or a drink at the bar. He loved attending local sporting events with friends and family. Whether it was a Fairfield Stags basketball game or a Thanksgiving crosstown rivals' football game, Joe was always ready. Over the years, his customers all became his friends. Joe attended countless birthday parties, graduation festivities, and weddings of all the great people that had become his larger Fairfield family.
Joe was a devoted attendee of St Anthony's Church. Whether it was planning the annual summer picnic or sitting down for a bowl of soup during lent, Joe steadfastly supported all their endeavors. Yet again, the people at St. Anthony's, just like his customers, were also family to him. Joe would give you the hat on his head if you needed it.
His love of sports didn't end at the Fairfield border. Joe was a rabid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He spent many an evening watching his Red Sox and would talk about them at length in the barber shop the next day. Joe and, his brother and best friend, Damian, would take trips to South Bend to cheer on the Irish football team. One of his favorite games to see was the annual contest between the Notre Dame and Navy football programs. His allegiance may have been divided, but his love for both teams was never questioned.
Upon his retirement at 84, having served the community of Fairfield for 62 years as a barber, Joe continued to fill his days with the love and friendship of all the people he had met. He would join his cherished friends at the Pine Creek Deli for a coffee, sandwich, and the banter he so loved. He continued to be active at his church and spent more time in St. Anthony's Charity Garden. Of course, he never missed an opportunity to see and speak with his brother. They commiserated daily and continued their adventures. He still attended Stags games and watched the Sox nightly. Just as throughout his life, he would regularly visit his hometown of West Rutland, especially when the yearly high school reunion arrived.
Joe will be greatly missed by daughters, AnnMarie Bennett and Maryann Trombetta, son-in-law Michael Trombetta, granddaughters Whitney Bennett (Ronnie Everett) and Christina Trombetta (Jonathan Merriam), and great-grandson Chase Joseph Everett, along with sister-in-law Sandra Vaccarella, and his nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes there are no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 9, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield. Followed by burial at Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be made to The Thomas Merton Center, 238 Jewett Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06606. Arrangements are in the care of the FAIRFIELD FUNERAL HOME OF EDMUND W. DOUGIELLO.

Fond memories of Pep in Vermont and his time at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Mom would send him back with enough food for a week.
I remember his sweet easy going manner and his devotion to Betty and family. A life well lived and loved.

A life so well lived. I have literally 50 years of memories from the airplane chair, through little league, my mom leaving my brother and I there while she went to Mecurio's and Fairfield Store , college cuts on credit, wedding eve haircut to bringing my own boys there.

AnnMarie and Family, I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. I sat in his chair for over 30 years getting my hair cut and his store saw the first haircuts of both my children. I always looked forward to seeing Joe and catching up on this and that and the happenings around town. I will never forget the day my Son vomited getting a haircut from being so scared. The way Joe handled it and calmed him was beyond incredible! What a tremendous human being! You will be missed Joe.

To the family and friends of Joe. I used to work with Joe's wife at Grand Union and that's how I met Joe, and he was the only place I'd go to get haircuts since I lived in Fairfield. It was great talking sports with him. Me being a Mets fan I had to bring up once in a while the 1986 World Series and Bill Buckner which was quite a sore spot for any Red Sox fan. After moving to Danbury, I would still stop by if I were in town visiting my parents or other family members to either get a haircut or to say hi to him, Paul, AnnMarie, and Donna. As years went by, I lost touch and one day went to stop by and saw that the shop was closed which saddened me never seeing or talking to him again. He was a great guy and famous in Fairfield and he will be remembered for a long time. He had a good long life, and I am sure he is up there talking sports with any Red Sox baseball player who has passed. Yes, including Bill Buckner.

AnnMarie & Family -

What fond memories our family (the Kochis') have of your dad at the barber shop. Our father would bring all four of us kids to see Joe the Barber for all our cuts. My brother also set up shop there as a young boy shining shoes. Enjoy all the memories you shared with your wonderful dad.

Where to start, through out the many years I was honored to work for and with a man who taught me and reminded me of what it´s all about daily showing kindness and respect for people who might not have had neither if they asked for one he gave two, he cooked for operation hope again paying it forward again and again, reminding me it´s so important to treat your neighbor and strangers as you would have them treat you, pretty simple yet so profound, I will try to to live by your values and who knows maybe it´ll catch on and we´ll have some peace in this place, and we can say that´s how Joe would do it, many thanks Joe V, GO SOX !!!

Joe was a great friend. Everyone who knew him loved him. We were fortunate to have him in our lives. He will truly be missed.

August 5, 2024

Joe was the best of Fairfield and America. He lived the American Dream of owning a business and being his own boss.
He was well loved throughout our Town.
He was the Town Barber who knew about all the "goings-on" here.
His little group including Paul, AnnMarie and Donna were a high point of my monthly hair cutting ritual.
Was sorry to see shop close several years ago.

Joe was a genuinely good and kind man even if this displaced NY Yankee fan had to listen to how great the Red Sox were.
My thoughts and prayers are with Joe and the entire Family at this most difficult time.
Sincerely,
Lou Ruggio

Joe was a big part of Faifield and will be missed. My son who is now 35 had his first of many haircuts in his shop. He always had the best candy! It was where I allowed him to go on his first trip into town alone. My condolences to his entire family. A piece of Fairfield is gone forever. May he rest in peace.

Sam Darcy

Joe was a huge part of our lives. The John Darcy family were routine and regular patrons for decades. The whole family went to Joe- mother, father brother, geez even my wife went to Joe. We were in his shop the week he made his last mortgage payment. Never wanted him to leave the business. He was epitome of a hometown institution. Thank you Joe. Our best to the family- so much to celebrate about Joe's life and what he brought to Fairfield Center.

Ann Marie, Mary Ann and family, As anyone that knew your dad, I was saddened to hear of his passing. My fondest memory was when I got the most awful hair cut and perm. Ann Marie, you brought me to the barber shop and your dad assessed the "damage". He calmly gave me a conditioner and a stern but loving advice to not let anyone do anything to my hair that they wanted! Your dad was a gentleman, always smiling, calm and that link, to me, of a different generation full of class, that we´ll never see again. Your mom has waited a long time for him to join her. Another wonderful person! I feel your loss, but just remember all your Sunday get togethers and vacations. I know that your parents and mine were from a mold that no longer is. They ARE the best! Thinking of your dad makes me smile and I glad to have known him. Sincerely, Barbara Miro

Joe represented the very best of Fairfield and America (service member, entrepreneur, family man, civic minded, and committed to his church). He could always make you smile and laugh, and his faith was inspiring. Visits to the barber shop were always special (and more so as he got older). His retirement and the closure of his shop left a real void.

Condolences to his family AND thank you for sharing him with us. His is a LIFE worth celebrating and memorializing.

So sorry for your loss. He was a great guy and an awesome friend to my older sister Grace Veronesi and her husband Thomas. I loved going to the barber shop to see him. May God bring him home. May God also give you some comfort
