My mother, Mrs. E White, was a para at Bessemer until she relocated out of state. I remember her being so nice to me when I'd pop by to visit my mom after work or go pick her up at dismissal. She was such a lover of education and so very personable. She somehow roped me into setting up the gym for a school event quite a few times. I remember she learned that I could draw well and had me draw something for her. Its been years and I am saddened to just now learn of her passing.

Jim and Rachel,

Upon returning to Greensboro this week, we were shocked and saddened upon learning of your daughter's death. Having lost a child, we know somewhat of the grief that you bear.

Although we did not personally know Leslie, we knew of the many fine and selfless contributions she made to the lives of others. Her character, joy for life, and confidence in herself and others speak to your fine job of parenting. May God help you through this difficult time and bring some semblence of peace back into your lives. If we can help you in any way, please let us know.

I knew Leslie as a parent volunteer and part time elementary tutor at Guilford Middle School. She was a wonderful person to be around. She had a tremendous love for her students and genuinely cared about her staff. She will always hold a special place in my heart and in the hearts of my children. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers, and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to each of you.

Leslie was a great friend and I will miss her very much. We have shared so many laughs, tears and memories. I loved watching basketball and calling back and forth during the games and listening to her during the plays of the game. I will miss her laugh more than anything. Her laugh would light up a room and make you feel warm all over.
Jim and Rachel you are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that God will wrap you in His love and give you the comfort you need at this time. I was truely blessed to have known and worked with her. She touched my life and my heart and I will never forget her. She will live on through everyone that she met and every life that she touched.

Leslie was an assistant principal when I taught at Guilford Middle. She was a REAL person..one that openly loved children and knew how to find the caring approach for every situation. As I begin my 31st year of teaching, I will keep Leslie dear to my heart.

I met Leslie when she first came to High Point. We taught together at Welborn and became instant friends. Our paths led both of us to SWMS where again we enjoyed the comaraderie of coworkers and special friends. We often dined together, vacationed together...
laughed and cried together. We maintained contact as she progressed through the ranks of assistant principal and her life dream of principal. We had lost touch for a few years but I now know God brought us together, once again, this year at Bessemer. I had the privilege of watching a true "Curriculum Facilitator"...."Education Cheerleader"...One who "walks the walk, and talks the talk"...lead with such ease and commitment that I found myself in awe of, this my special friend. My heart reaches out to Rachel and Jim. May you find strength in knowing the love and admiration that Leslie not only gave but received. I am sure she had no idea of her impact on every life she touched! I will miss her greatly!! I am sure she is "educating all the little angels in heaven!" Peace, Love, and Deepest Sympathy are extended to her family!

I am shocked and very sad to learn of Leslie's untimely death. I regret not being able to pay my respects because I was out of town.

My daughter (Kacie) had the privilege of being one of her students. I had the privilege of hiring and working with Leslie at Soutwest Middle School.

It is rare to find one with such enthusiasm and zest for life. And, her laugh lifted the spirits of all around her. Every life she touched is better for the experience. Every child she made believe in themselves is contributing more to society because she cared enough to go the extra mile. Our profession is honored by her very presence.

Jim and Rachel, the loss you feel is far greater than any of us can understand. As you face the days ahead, may your trust in God give you the strength to face each day; may your wonderful memories of Leslie lift your spirits, and may you find peace knowing she is now in God's loving arms.

With deepest sympathy,

I am very sad to hear of Leslie's passing. I had the pleasure of serving with and getting to know her in the Greensboro Jaycees. She had a wonderful, outgoing personality. She put a smile on the face of evenyone she met! She would later become an accomplished educator with the Guilford Co. Schools. Our community was lucky to have benefited from her service! Leslie, her tallents, and her love for school childern will be missed!

Mr. and Ms. Dunn,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Leslie's passing. She was a dear friend and co-worker of mine while she was assigned at Guilford Middle. I was honored to work with and for her as "her" school resource officer for several years. Even after she transferred to Bessemer it was always a pleasure to make it by Huffine Mill Rd. to sneak a visit with her. If I didn't make it by often enough I knew she would be by Western Guilford HS to see me and her former students. She always and I mean always spoke highly of her family and I felt as if I knew each of you even without meeting. She was proud of her brother and loved dearly her nephews. She will be missed greatly by the entire Guilford County School system, The many officers of the Greensboro Police Dept School Resource Section, and by thousands of young lives that she helped mold and in many cases mend. I am currently serving with the Army in Afghanistan and will never forget that upon learning of my impending departure, she made a special trip to WGHS to say good-bye and wish me luck. I will personally miss seeing her upon my return and there will forever be a void in my heart as I am sure many others as well.

May the Lord Bless you and Keep you in the days and weeks to come, and may His light shine upon you and comfort you with precious memories of Leslie.

We were very saddened to hear of the death of Leslie Dunn and will always remember her for the wonderful person that she truly was. The children at Bessemer Elementary School were lucky to have had her as their principal. She always went well beyond all expectations to provide the loving environment at that school within which learning and discipline flourished. We have lost a wonderful person, who we will miss dearly.

Dear Dunn Family,

You know how I feel about Leslie - She has been my best friend and sister for 25 years. We have been there for each other during the ups/downs, the trials/tribulations. I can't imagine what my life would have been without her.

She taught me so much about believing in myself and giving me the self-esteem to accomplish any goal. She taught me the human side of the Carolina Tarheels and professional golf. I could/would sit and listen to her tell the stories. With Leslie, was there a choice? (Mr. Dunn, I know you will miss the half time commentary from Coach Leslie!)

For many years, Leslie shared the mountain house with me and my husband's friends. They loved her the minute they met her. Those were some of the best times ever!

We have watched the Olympics together when "JW" was playing. We talked on the phone every other day, we have always been there for each other.

Our goal after retirement was to buy a RV and explore North America. Leslie was to drive, of course!

When I heard the news I was devestated, but after attending the "Celebration of Life" today I can't imagine how proud you are of your daughter because she made a difference in so many lives!!
Wasn't it a beautiful site to know all of the seats were taken by people showing their love and respect for your daughter?
We love you....

I dont't really know what to say except "I'm so very sorry!" Somehow that just isn't enough, nor is it right to have to be telling Jim and Rachel (Mr. and Mrs. Dunn, as I had to address them in my younger years) this. My family and the Dunns go way back. My two brothers and myself, and Alan and Leslie sort of grew up together, vacations, holidays, etc. Everyone grew up and went different ways, but we always knew what was going on within the families.

Jim, Rachel and Alan, I am truly sorry for your loss. I still can't believe its true. This is not suppose to happen. I can assure you of one thing, Leslie is in very, very good company.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, not just this week, the next month, but for years to come, life has a way of making us take a long look and do an assessment on ourselfs.

My family prays for your peace, and continued love of your family. They will help get you though this terrible time.

Mr&Mrs Dunn

I met Leslie through her best friend Robin Brown who happens to be a dear friend of mine. Upon meeting her for the first time was like knowing her for years. She was easy to fall in love with...so full of life.

Leslie leaves an untouchable legacy behind, and know she will never be forgotten by the many different lives she touched.
Truly this world has lost one of its Angels.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of loss...May our Heavenly Father hold you both in His arms as He comforts you.

I attended Bessemer Elementary from 2001-2004. When Ms. Dunn came it was in 2002 and I was in the 4th Grade. At that time I had Ms. Stokes. During this time my little brother was in Kindergarten with Ms. Pike.

When I went to 5th Grade my little brother went to the 1st grade. I remember the awards program we had and how my name is still on a trophy there for most improved in Reading for 2003-2004 school year. I remember the Graduation Program and walking across the stage and getting medals. I remember coming back a few years later and learning form Ms. Cornwell that 5th grade will begin switching classes to prepare them for Middle School.

Once I left to go to 6th grade in 2004, my little brother began crying in class because he wanted me to stay at Bessemer. But Ms. Dunn worked with him to make him feel better, he would read in her office and he would go there until he felt comfortable to go back to class.

He soon begun to act better. Soon after, he went to 2nd grade and I went 7th. I would visit Bessemer periodically and talk with some of my previous teachers, (3rd Grade: Ms. Smith; 4th Grade: Ms. Stokes; 5th Grade: I had Ms. Langa but she doesn't work there anymore so i talked with Ms. Cornwell and Ms. Ferrell and some of the other teachers I knew). I would also go and visit Ms. Dunn and say hi to her.

By my 8th Grade year my brother was in 3rd grade, he got in trouble not as often but some during this time. Ms. Dunn left in January and I didn't know it until I brought it up and started talking about her and how she was the Principal there. My little brother, Brandon Johns, told me she didn't work there anymore, but he didn't know where she went.

I haven't seen or spoken with her since.

I am so shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of Leslie. I met her by my association with her parents Jim and Rachel at Beech Mountain. I became good friends with her and her parents. Leslie brought so much life and energy to everything she did.She was so dedicated and committed to the education of children. She impacted so many children and worked so hard to reach the level she was at. My heart is heavy with sympathy for the Dunns.Leslie was truly a good friend and a remarkable individual. She made us all better people.

I taught sixth grade with Leslie at Southwest Middle School from 1992-1994. We both taught Math and Science. She was a hoot, a ball of fire, and always uplifting. She was working on her administrative degree during this time. I remember her being very active in the Greensboro Jaycees. She was always happy, smiling, talking, and good for a laugh. We lost touch as I became a stay home Mom for six years before returning to the classroom. I deeply regret that we did not have an opportunity to continue our time together. I would have loved working for her as my administrator. I have a friend whom I recently taught with that previously worked for Leslie at Bessemer. She raved about how wonderful she was as a principal. Sudden deaths are so hard to understand and accept, but be comforted in knowing that Leslie is much better off than any of us left on this Earth. You will reunite some day in heaven. Until then, may your memories comfort you. With thoughts and prayers for you all, Mary Borum

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Leslie enjoyed life to the fullest. She gave so much of herself to education. She was in many ways so much like her mother. We had a lot of fun times growing up in the neighborhood during our early years. I was thankful to meet her again when she lived in Hickory for a short while and was just starting to teach. It amazes me that she has touched so many students lives. I will miss her fun and laughter. May God comfort you at this time of loss.

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. My deepest condolences are with you at this difficult time. I thank God that Leslie was placed in an office at Oak Ridge Elementary while waiting for her new school to be complete. She was so excited and she truely touched my heart. I only knew her for a short time but her love and happiness made me feel like I had know her for ages. She was an awesome lady and I will never forget her. The new school will always for me be Pearce-Dunn Elemenatary or even better Leslie Dunn Elementary. May God bless her family with the comfort that only he can give.My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Leslie was so many things to so many people. Most of all she was my encourger, mentor, and friend. She was so special that she made all of us think we were her best friends. She was so special in that way. The thing that I will always remember most is her love and her desire for righteousness and justics for ALL children. Words can not say how much I will miss Leslie being part of my life.

We had the privilege of knowing Leslie while we lived in North Carolina. She made us feel like we had known her forever. We couldn't go anywhere with her without someone calling "Miss Dunn". Students and parents all adored her and she always had a smile on her face. Carolina will be missing of their biggest fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Iworked with Leslie at Guilford Middle for five years. She was loved dearly by the staff and students. Leslie inspired me to want to go into school administration. She was an excellent role model and I learned so much from her. Leslie loved children and always acted in the best interest of each child. Leslie, thanks for all you taught me in the 5 years we worked together and for your compassion and love for children. You have touched the lives of so many children--some of them now adults. You will live on in our hearts and may we never forget your smile.

I met Leslie in a teachers' workshop last year, where she kept making the most profound comments, and I approached her during a break to ask who she was. I was surprised to find out that she was a Principal in a workshop designed for teachers. It turned out that her parents and mine are friends. I have always heard the best things about Leslie and her schools, her love for her students, and her support for her teachers. She will be sorely missed by all in the Guilford County Schools. I am sure Pearce and Bessemer will carry her dreams on to completion!

Leslie was my friend. We haven't seen each other in years, but we were neighbors when we lived in Gastonia, and schoolmates until she left to move to Greensboro in our senior year. When we heard she was going to have to leave us, we were all devastated, and in the way of sentimental high school girls, we had a going-away pajama party and presented Leslie with a puppy to take with her. Of course, we didn't ask anyone in the family if this was ok, and I was delegated to talk her mother into letting her keep it, to no avail. As a mother myself now, I am both amused at our impulsivity and horrified by the position we put her mother in, having to tell her no!

There was no brighter light in this world than Leslie. She loved her family so much and I remember she adored her big brother Alan.

One thing I can say, Leslie is likely enjoying a fine time in heaven, visiting with Frank Fuller, Kelly Morgan, Carol Matthews and others who represent the AHS Class of 1978. Bless you all who have lost so much.

Dear Rachel, Jim & Alan,
I was so sorry to hear about Leslie, Just wanted to know I am thinking of you and saying prayers for all of you. Remember me, I use to babysit Leslie and Alan when
you lived in Mooresville.

Lynda Sholar

June 29, 2007

memories: Sept. 1960, Pinewood Circle, Mooresville, NC...New neighbors move in next door. I'm 12 yrs. old and immediately notice a baby is among the new family. I go right up the steps and ask if I can hold her. She was 4 months old. That's how I met Leslie Dunn.... Later my mother would allow me 10 minutes to go visit the Dunns next door when Leslie was an infant. I'd feed her baby food while Rachel cooked supper for her family. As a toddler Leslie rode in the basket of my bicycle all around the neighborhood. I attended her elementary programs when she was a student at South School. She spent a weekend with me when I was a student at Greensboro College. Later she visited me when I lived in Seattle, Wa. I spent time with her in Greensboro, and she proudly showed me around "her" Bessemer Elementary School. We were always amazed that our friendship grew throughout our lives no matter the different ages, phases, and places of residence, or miles in between. We met when I was 12 years old and she was 4 months old, and we truly were friends as adults. She was my baby girl, and I am heartbroken at this loss. My love and thoughts and prayers are with Jim, Rachel, and Alan whom I also consider my family.

Dunn Family,
The very first time I meet and saw Leslie's enthusiam, I knew that having her at Pearce was going to be an incredible ride. I enjoyed her spirit, her laugh and her love for "our" children. Her energy made me want to do more at Pearce. She was appreciated and loved and will be missed by the E.P. Pearce Family. Thank you for sharing your wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and friend with us.

Alan and family,
My sincere condolences to you all. I met Leslie through my daughter Melanie, who is to teach at Pearce Elementary beginning in August. Melanie was so excited with this opportunity to work with and for Leslie. The enthusiasm and love she showed for children and her staff was exceptional. Leslie cannot simply be replaced as principal, there just is not an adequate substitute. :(
It is unfortunate that we did not meet Alan, I am leaving the Family Dollar Team in a few weeks to move to Dental Professional. Leslie and Melanie discovered in conversation that we both work for P&G. She was simply a delight, and I looked forward to all the learnings that she would have offered my daughter. She was an excellent role model for a new teacher.
My thoughts are with you and your family, and I pray for strength for you all and the staff of Pearce Elementary.
Sincerely,
Maria Sampson

I was so excited about our years together at Pearce. Your energy and enthusiasm was so contagious and your entire staff had caught your "bug" already. We will carry on the plans you inspired in all of us. I am honored I was one of yours even for a short time. You had the spark we all needed and the creative energy so many educators lack now in the field. I loved that you had your new and fresh ideas even after being an educator for quite some time. I was sorry to hear about your loss of a daughter. I had worked with Leslie at Guilford Middle School. She always wore a smile. She was great to work with. Her word on what was to be done was consistent. She was a very like able person. God bless you and comfort you.

Ms. Dunn was a wonderful principal and friend for the past three years and will be missed more than words can say. Her smile, laugh, and the way she truly cared for those around her were a gift to all of us who knew her. I enjoyed working for Ms. Dunn at Bessemer Elementary very much and am so thankful to have worked with her. We are praying for you, her family.
