Lawrence Doherty Obituary

DOHERTY Lawrence (Larry) E. Doherty, age 80, of Oxford, and formerly of Throggs Neck, N.Y., a retired detective for the New York Police Department, died peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at Griffin Hospital. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on July 31, 1927, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Larry was a former employee of the F. Ruggiero & Sons Funeral Home in the Bronx, N.Y. for more than 30 years and was a former officer of the Bronx Homing Pigeon Club. He was predeceased by a brother, John Doherty; and two sisters, Kay McCarthy and Anna Willock. Survivors include his devoted wife of 57 years, Madeline (Mickey) Shaughnessy Doherty; eight loving children, Patty Sullivan and her husband, Walter, of Fairfield, Maureen (Mo) Blees and her husband, George, of Oxford, Eileen Doherty and Donna Haller of St. Louis, Mo., Madeline Lennon and her husband, Tom, of Oxford, Anne O'Malley and her husband, John, of Pearl River, N.Y., Kathleen Delano of Throggs Neck, N.Y., Joan Bourke and her husband, Kevin, of Pearl River, N.Y., Larry Doherty Jr. and Ken Sawicki of Beacon Falls; two brothers, Charlie Doherty of Tennessee, James Doherty of New York; a sister, Peggy Tuohy of Michigan; 18 cherished grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 9 a.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, and at 10 a.m. in Good Shepherd Church, Seymour for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment with military honors will follow in Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Special Olympics c/o Mo Blees, 13 Lisbon Terrace, Oxford, CT 06478. Just came from Mr. Doherty's "Celebration of Life" Mass and what a celebration and inspiration it was! The pigeons are soaring!! All our love & sympathy to Mickey and the whole Doherty family (even if your last name is not Doherty)!

I only met him a few times, but from all the wonderful stories his son Larry has told me, it's clear that he was very loved and will be greatly missed. I wish I'd had a chance to get to know him better. My condolences to the Doherty family.
