Leo P. Carroll
Leo P. Carroll, a lifetime resident of Milford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024. Born July 5, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Leo was the son of the late Dr. Philip Carroll and the late Wanda (Staszewski) Carroll.
Leo is survived by his cherished wife of 26 years, Barbara Wood Carroll, his sons Dr. Christopher Carroll (Katherine) and Morgan Carroll, daughter Cynthia Donaher (Patrick) and his stepson Cosbie Marable IV. He was also an adoring grandfather to Jackie, Daniel, Mary Ellen, Charlie, William, and Elizabeth. He is survived by his brothers Philip (Mimi) Carroll and Roger (Joyce) Carroll and predeceased by his brothers Walter Carroll and Roy Carroll.
A proud graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School in 1962, Leo was later inducted into the Fairfield Prep Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1960 Championship Football team. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Villanova University in 1966 and a Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School in 1969.
Leo was a highly respected Attorney-At-Law with a distinguished career spanning five decades, primarily practicing in Milford, Connecticut. Early in his career, he served as public defender in Milford Superior Court and as City Attorney before transitioning to private practice. Leo went on to become the managing partner of Stevens, Carroll, and Carveth, and later Carroll, Curseadean, and Moore, retiring in 2018. Known as a developer's lawyer, he specialized in real estate development projects, guiding clients through complex transactions and regulatory processes. In 2017, he received the Milford Bar Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
In addition to his legal career, Leo held extensive business and directorship roles. Over the years, he served on the boards of the American Red Cross (Milford Chapter), Milford Mental Health Center (now Bridges), and the United Way of Milford. He served on the Milford Bank Board of Directors as a corporator and ultimately the Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2008 to 2020. He also served as a Member of the Board of the Connecticut Attorneys Title Insurance Company (CATIC). In 2010, Leo joined the Board of Directors for The Milford Hospital, where his leadership was instrumental in the successful transition from The Milford Hospital to Bridgeport Hospital/Yale New Haven Health. His efforts helped secure a strong and sustainable future for healthcare in the local community which was deeply meaningful to him.
Leo was deeply committed to helping others on the path to recovery. As a friend of Bill W. for 53 continuous years, Leo embraced the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. He gave of himself freely and helped countless others find strength and joy in recovery. Beyond his personal mentorship, Leo served on the Board of Directors (1993- 2000) for High Watch Farm, the world's first addiction recovery center founded on the principles of AA in Kent, Connecticut. He was honored as Director Emeritus thereafter.
In his personal time, Leo could be found with family and friends, fishing and traveling. He loved to sit on his porch with the "occasional" cigar and watch the boats go by. His philosophy was best captured by his favorite quote from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."
Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 4p.m. to 7p.m., at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 9a.m. at Saint Ann Church, 501 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford. Interment will be private.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Michael J. Morris and his healthcare team at Memorial Sloan Kettering for their exceptional care and dedication for the past 26 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for Genitourinary Oncology.
