Lloyd Nelson Obituary
He was born in Norwich, Conn., on March 29, 1922. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1943 and spent two years in the Navy, 1944-46. He earned a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of Connecticut in 1950.
After a few years of teaching, he developed a lifelong interest in statistics and quality control. He spent almost 30 years of his career at various positions at General Electric Co. He was proud to join Nashua Corporation in 1980, where he served as the Director of Statistical Methods until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his daughters, Fay Hulett (Duard) and Barbara Stevens (Michael); daughter-in-law, Adrienne Nelson; two grandchildren, Sarah Jane Ramey and Lloyd Nelson Ramey; and a great-grandson, Holden Alexander Ramey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Pallant Nelson and his son, Peter R. Nelson.
The family wishes to thank all of Dr. Nelson's friends at Nashua Corporation and in Londonderry and elsewhere. He loved his work and his life in New Hampshire in large part due to the wonderful people he enjoyed as colleagues, friends and neighbors.

Lloyd was a mentor to many diversified technical engineers, scientists and managers. He was technically a wiz / genius in psychology, the physical and mental realm of human thought, statistics and system thinking. He published a column in the back of JQT called "Technical Aids" which was a true delight for the engineer without a PC in the 1980s. Is your process Being Adjusted Too Frequently? Dr. Lloyd S. Nelson will not be forgotten in the annals of Quality Engineering where variation reduction and control have proven to be key attributes for success. I often picked up the new JQT issue to just read Lloyd's book reviews-- very entertaining and educational. His sense of humor and logic will not be surpassed in my lifetime. He lives in many of us who worked with him at Nashua Corp. Thank you Dr. Nelson for everything you gave us and all the best to your family and friends. Bill Calderwood

To the Nelson family,
It's frequently that I think of Dr. Nelson, especially when asking myself: "How would Lloyd handle this situation?" Somehow the answer comes along, setting me in the right direction. I truly enjoyed learning from and working with him at Nashua Corporation. Many of us would visit with him during his extended time as a consultant during his early retirement, mainly to just catch up. Much thanks to Dr. Nelson for having such a positive impact on our lives. We are very lucky to have known him.
