Marianne Arlia Obituary

ARLIA Marianne Post Arlia, age 78, of Stratford, and a former longtime resident of Bridgeport, devoted and beloved mother of Joanne Arlia, entered eternal life after a long and valiant struggle with many illnesses on Friday, May 7, 2004, with her daughter by her side. Mrs. Arlia was born on October 14, 1925, in Gumbinnen, East Prussia, Germany, to the late Johann and Bertha Peldszus Post. She was a refugee during World War II, and settled in Dortmund, Germany, after the war. Mrs. Arlia came to the United States in 1955 after marrying the late Joseph A. Arlia and became a proud citizen of the United States shortly thereafter. She was a devoted mother, wife, daughter and friend, and an expert at baking, cooking, sewing, needlework, knitting, crocheting and gardening. She also enjoyed traveling, especially touring Europe and cruises. She was employed at Remington Rand for more than 20 years and Dresser Industries for 11 years, prior to her retirement in 1987. Mrs. Arlia was a member and volunteer at the Eisenhower Senior Center in Bridgeport for a number of years and was honored many times by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Community. Through her affiliation there, she had the honor of being chosen to attend the Connecticut Senior Intern Program in Washington, D.C., sponsored by United States Senator Christopher J. Dodd. Mrs. Arlia was proud to have her name enshrined in the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island. Among her many attributes, she will be remembered for her grace and dignity, determination, kindness, courage, strength, enduring work ethic, good nature and her love of the New York Giants. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Bruno and Ernest Post. In addition to her daughter, she is survived by several cousins in Germany; and many dear friends. Her daughter wishes to thank the 7 South staff at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Dr. DoRosario, and United VNA Hospice at Home Program for the wonderful care they administered. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at 9 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford, and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, Stratford, with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Bridgeport. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

May 10, 2004

I can still remember when Marianne first became part of our family. I was so happy that my brother Joe (whom I adored) had married this pretty blond lady in waiting. He was so proud of her and loved her very much to marry and give her the Arlia name. I would love to go over to their apartment or house and spend time with her. I enjoyed watching her cook delicious meals and talking with her. I loved to hear her tell stories of her past and her life in Germany and how she met my brother on the train to Italy. Even when she divorced my brother, I still had deep respect for her as the mother of his daughter and admired her determination. She always appreciated our family togetherness and celebrations. In the past 49 years, we spent many an hour visiting, talking, laughing and in tears together as sister-in-laws. She will always hold a special place in my heart. God Bless You , Marianne and give you eternal peace.
