Mary Elizabeth Hynes, age 93, wife of the late Commander USN (ret.) Edward J. Hynes of Westport, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 in Norwalk Hospital. Mary was born March 27, 1922 in Providence, RI and was the daughter of the late Patrick J. & Mary H. McManus. Mary was a resident of Westport for 49 years and lived her life with a great sense of independence, grace, generosity, and relentless work ethic. She was a sharp, gifted business woman, extraordinarily devoted wife, caring mother for 64 amazing years, and a true friend to many. She retired as the Assistant Treasurer from the Bigelow Tea Company at age 90.
Family was most important to Mary who was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her loving memory will be cherished by her children: James (Janet) of Coopersburg, PA; Joseph (Jayne) of Westport, CT; Mary of Northampton, MA; Celeste (Tom) of Weston, MA; her sister, Sister Patricia Ann McManus. Mary is also survived by grandchildren (Kevin, Mark, Victoria, Michael, Stephanie, and Kimberly Hynes; John and Kevin "Wolfe"; 1 great grandchild (Declan Hynes).
Mary enjoyed playing bridge, Scrabble, and global traveling. She was a member of the Women's Club of Weston and former Secretary of the Western Connecticut Retired Officers Association.
Friends may greet the family on Thursday June 4, 2015 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM in Norwalk's Hoyt-Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 5 East Wall Street. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:00 AM in Assumption Church, Westport. Interment will follow at 3:00 PM at St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston, RI.
