Mary D. Petrie, 81, of Branford, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday evening, September 9, 2012, in the comfort of her home, with her loving family by her side. Mary will always be an example of kindness and strength, of grit and grace. It's hard to believe she's been gone so long. She will be remembered with love, forever.

I love and miss you Mommy

Suzanne Liscouski

September 16, 2012

Short Eulogy by Suzanne Liscouski:

This is very hard for me to do today, as I will miss my Mother so much I'm not sure I can make it through—but I wanted to honor my Mother Mary Daphne Petrie.

Mom came from the greatest generation, a generation where she watched her parents work hard to fulfill their American dreams after they came, as she would say, “off the boat” from Italy. She grew up in the valley of CT during the depression; she had great stories of growing up in those times with her father running the corner store. They barely made ends meet, but she was happy. She encompassed the values that made this country great, working hard and helping others. She would often tell tales of working at the hospital beyond her shift just because she didn't want to leave her patients in labor. She was so proud to be a nurse.

Mom was tough, smart, and incredibly good hearted. While as some of you know she pushed us hard to do the right thing, it's because she wanted us to be successful and have a better life. She always said when a situation was challenging, “whoever has more brains uses them” because she expected us as her children to rise to any occasion. And even though she had a hard time saying it, she did appreciate all we did for her.

Mom was a Cancer survivor for over 20 years, and those 20 years were a gift. She got to experience a lot of life over those years, especially being with her grandchildren which she loved so much. Along with my father Stewart, they were the light of her life. In fact, she called my son bobby her “sweetheart”, every time they spoke that's what they'd call eachother. When I explained to him Nana's passing, the first thing he said was “she'll always be my sweetheart” , which of course sent me immediately into tears. She also was blessed with so many friends, many of which I see here today. I have decades of stories of her with her best friends, mostly Aunt Alice and Aunt Krys and know a lot of their travels, capers, and favorite drinks. Don't worry, I will not get into those stories here!

As hard as this has been over that last years, months, days and even hours until Mom's passing, I know she would want us all to remember the happier things. Her dry sense of humor, never missing a chance to make a wise crack; her love of counted cross stitch and needlepoint, how she hunted for fresh mushrooms. She was a phenomenal cook, especially for holiday meals when we all looked forward to capelletti, passatelli, pinioli cookies and her famous soups. She made my father so happy, and their quips back and forth were nothing short of a sit-com.

Mom was always there for me as I know she was for many of us, always willing to listen on the phone to our problems, offer advice, or just agree that whatever we were complaining about was wholly justified, as any best friend would say.

So Mom, there are so many things I will likely look back and wish I had said no matter how many times I wrote this. I know we all share the sentiment that you are an amazing woman that we love, and that we will surely miss. You will always be in our hearts.

Mary was someone I always looked up to. When I was a little girl, her wedding was the first one I was ever allowed to attend, and I'll always remember what a beautiful bride she was. To me, Mary was also a wonderful role model of how to be a caring daughter to her mother. I try to live up to the example she set, in caring for my own mother. Loving thoughts go out to Mary-Ellen, Patty and Suzanne.

To my friend Mary, we have shared many years of fun: finding shells, sunning, cooking and sharing email jokes. I know you went non stop with the Angels to heaven. Last night I looked up at the stars and knew they were the porch lights of all the family and friends welcoming you.

Over the course of her life Mary was many things to many people: a fantastic mom, a great friend, a valuable member of the community. To me, she was simply my Nana. She was a presence in many of my fondest memories from childhood, and I'll never forget the times I spent under her feet and in her way as I followed her around her kitchen. I'll always treasure those times we spent together, and I'll never forget her or the positive influence she had on my life. I probably never told her I loved her as much as I should have, but I hope that she knew. We've all suffered a loss with her passing, and the world is just a little bit colder without the warmth of her smile. I'll miss you, Nana.
