Nicholas Magoulas Obituary

Nicholas Magoulas
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nick Magoulas. Nicholas, at the age of 87, loving husband of 64 years to Sophia Hallas Magoulas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. He was one of a kind, had the gentlest soul and lived a long life filled with love. Nick was born in Batsi, Andros, Greece, and left to become a merchant marine at age 16. He always dreamt of coming to America, then he bravely came to the US not knowing the language and built the life of his dreams. Nick married "the most beautiful woman" in the Holy Trinity parish on February 20, 1955. They had 5 beautiful children and many happy years raising them in Monroe, CT. He owned and operated the Holiday Diner in Danbury, CT for 39 years, leaving a lasting impression on his happy customers. Nick was an avid fisherman, member of the Holy Trinity church and baseball fan, always rooting for his Dodgers.
He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Maria Collins, parents Kostandinos and Katerina and brothers Themistocles and Vasilios. Left to cherish his memory, Nick is survived by his loving wife Sophie, brother Stavros and his wife Maria, four children and their partners: Cathryn and James Greer, Charles Magoulas and Mary Andreotta, Melissa and Butch Cook and Michael Magoulas and Megan Miller, 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
As we say in the Greek culture, "Memory Everlasting." The Rite of Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Georgios Livaditis Presbyter officiating followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport. Calling hours will take place on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until time of service in the church. The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St., Bridgeport has been entrusted with the service. In honor of those he loved, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Nicholas. We were having a big party at our house. Many people there. All Greek as I remember. It must have been a Name Day celebration. We had a mammoth back yard. It was city property but we were lucky enough to use it as our private ball field.
We were playing wiffle ball. Dusk was approaching. Here comes Nick up the driveway in that old grey car wearing his usual smile. We were just putting the ball and bat away. Nick, always up for a game of wiffle ball asked why we were calling it quits. "It's getting too dark." He asked me to go into the house and get the keys from all the men. Of course, I did. Nick took the keys and moved all the cars side by side. After putting all the head lights on we had our first night game. Once again, that was so cool! Nick Magoulas Stadium was born!
Nick, you're the best. I love you, Pete

One of my first jobs out of high school was working at the Holiday Diner --- Nick was bigger than life and we all loved him!!! He and Gus ran a tight ship - and of course, there was always Sophie! God Bless you Nick as you reunite with all those who have gone before you.

I was 7 years old when Nick was introduced to our family. Even at my young age I knew he was different. Not much later I realized he was special.

Nick slept at our home the night before he and my sweet cousin Sophie got married. All the males in the wedding party stayed the night. It was a thrilling night for me. Nick convinced my mother I should have a "relaxed bed time" that night. After all it was a special night and it was for the guys.

It was so much fun hearing swears, jokes, laughs and seeing them drink from the biggest bottle of Seagram's 7 ever. I specifically remember Nick not ignoring me as adults usually did. Next thing I knew Nick and Sophie were living downstairs from us. When coming home from a hard day's work Nick did not go directly into their apartment if I was playing outside. He spent a few minutes with me first! I'm talking about a newlywed!!!

Nick and one of his relatives rented a combination restaurant / grocery store / bakery / pizza place in Manasquan Beach, New Jersey. I went on the train with Sophie, pregnant with Cathy, and spent a week or so in Manasquan. Nick, as usual did not ignore me. He let me help out where I could. Fold pizza boxes, sweep the floor, watch the grocery store.

He also gave me money to play the pin ball machine. And when the place closed for the night Nick put coffee cups under the back legs of the pin ball machine to make it level. This would make it possible to get a ball stuck in a scoring position. This resulted in winning unlimited free games for me! Damn, how cool was that!

One fall day I was driving Nick and Sophie to Vermont to visit Maria. Well, I missed the exit. All of a sudden facing us was a massive sign saying Welcome to Canada! I took a lot of ribbing from Nick after that. Of course, it was all in fun. Every time he saw me from then on, he would call me "O Canada" and start singing the Canadian National Anthem. I loved it.

To enumerate all the kindness and fun Nick showed me over time would take forever for me to pen.

Nick, I'm really going to miss you. Love, Pete

Though I did not know Nick I can definitely see how his life influenced his children's lives. My daughter had the privilege of having Chuck as a teacher and based on what I've read, Nick led a life that his children emulate and Chuck is truly proof of that. His joy, drive and desire to see our children succeed is a testament of his upbringing. We wanted to make sure we shared our thoughts, love and prayers for you (Chuck) and your entire family. We know God's Spirit will continue to comfort you all during this time.

It was a feast. The Holiday Diner was a place you looked forward to going to.Nick would greet you with a hearty hello, truly glad to see you.The busier the better, everyone hustling,Nick had a hand in everything that went on.The jokes the banter the antics but most of all the kindness that i have not found since in any eating place.Nick wanted you to come and be there and ask where you had been if you missed a couple of days.He cared for us.I am very fortunate for the life long memories i will keep and cherish of Nick and those Diner days.

Ode to Nick (my sweet hero)

Nick was not known to frown.
Nick was not known to say a mean word.
Nick was very generous.
Nick was very loving.
Nick had the heart of a lion while being gentile as a lamb.

God does not dole out many Nicks.
Thank you, God

As a 10 yr old girl, my sister and I loved visiting "Mr Nick" with our grandfather Saturday mornings. We were always welcomed by his booming hello! Nick knew everyone, and no one was a stranger at his diner.

Those weren't just Saturday breakfasts with grandpa, rather a distraction for 2 little girls with a very sick mom in the hospital who found an hour's solace at the Holiday. Nick went out of his way to make us feel special and it's hard finding that today; it's something I never forgot.

I was deeply saddened to read of Nick's passing. After 40 yrs, and although I no longer live in CT, I've thought of him often. He was an imperative part of my childhood and that hour each week made my world a whole lot brighter. It got me through dark times.

Please know how much of an impact he made on my life, and on many lives, whether locals or those just passing through. We can look forward to having pancakes with him again someday as he welcomes us home!

With sincere condolences,
