Nicholas Yanosy Obituary

Yanosy , Nicholas A.
Nicholas Anthony Yanosy passed peacefully in his home at Benchmark at Split Rock in Shelton. He was born January 16, 1947 in Bridgeport to Nicholas and Jeanette Yanosy. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cheryl Yanosy; his children, Sarah and Anita Sreedhar, Matthew and Carolina Yanosy; his grandchildren, Jonah, Sidra, and Sophia; his sister, Susan Ohanesian and her husband, George; loving brothers- and sisters-in-law, David Ward, Sue Anne and Vincent Maraventano, Christine and John Kudravy; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; as well as his daily sources of joy and hope, Nancy Carlin and Alexis Pagan. Nick's enthusiasm for helping others took many forms. He was a dedicated teacher for 35 years at Harding High School in Bridgeport. He was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2001 and shared his passion for teaching through compassion for his students. He served as a basketball coach and Commissioner of Biddy Basketball in Shelton. Nick was an avid golfer and member of Brownson Country Club for over 30 years as well as Chairman of the Brownson Classic golf tournament to benefit the Valley Association for Retarded Children and Adults. From the outset of his diagnosis of Alzheimer's ten years ago, he not only fought his own battle with the disease, but was a research participant and advocate in the search for a cure. The family would like to thank the loving community at Benchmark and the staff of Caring Hospice for their kindness and compassion. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 28th from 4:00 – 7:00 in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 11:00 AM, meeting directly at the First Congregational Church of Stratford, 2301 Main Street. Donations can be made in Nick's memory to the Institute for Neurodegenerative Disorders, 60 Temple Street, Suite 8B, New Haven, CT 06510 or Caring Hospice, 45 Church Street, Stamford, CT 06906

Gary and I are both very sad for your loss, Cheryl, Sue, Matt, and Sarah. I have great memories of cousin Nick (or Nicky Boy, as he was called by his aunts and uncles), including his years at Harding where we overlapped, when I was a student. He helped me out many times. For cousin Laura and myself, he was the big brother that we never had.
