Philip Ness Obituary

Philip Eugene Ness, Sr.
Born in York, PA, to Marlet and Ruth (Ebersole) Ness on June 2, 1930. Both preceded him in death, as well as siblings Marlet and Faith. Phil went to his heavenly reward on January 31, 2024, surrounded by family.
Phil's formative years were spent in York. His family moved to Bridgeport, CT, while he was in high school, and he went on to attend Springfield College. His time at Springfield was interrupted by honorable service in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning, he married the love of his life and wife of 69 years, Patricia (Hudzik). She survives. Upon graduation from Springfield, Phil began a successful career as an educator, serving as teacher, coach and administrator at different schools in Stratford, CT. Together, Phil and Patty raised three children in Fairfield, CT: Phil (Katie) Ness Jr., Celia (George) Kyer and Kirsten (Tony) Wingen. They survive as well as grandchildren Jake (Laura) Kyer, Corey (Liz) Wingen, Will (Meg) Ness, Luke (Danielle) Kyer, Sara (Greg) Wilhelm, James Ness, Jessica Wingen and Thomas (Jennifer) Ness. Phil was further blessed with great-grandchildren Abby Kyer, Nate Kyer, PJ Wingen, Caleb Wilhelm, Charlie Wingen, Hannah Wilhelm, Mae Wingen and Luke Kyer. He loved and was loved by numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
Phil was known to friends and family as "Moose." Beyond being an acclaimed educator and coach, Moose was a true friend to many and a valued member of his parishes. He loved his wife, family and a great joke. He enjoyed the ocean and gardening. His presence, like his stature, was enormous, filling the room with joy, laughter and love.

I knew him as "Mosse", but I always liked and respected him for his calm demeanor. One time, my lunch money was taken (a shake down)! I don't know how he found out, but I was called to his office and he asked how much was taken. I think it was like $1.50, or something like that. He reached into his own pocket and gave me his own $$ so I could buy lunch!

I also remember how he would quietly dare NOT to laugh at his signature on hall passes...P.Ness (but the way he wrote the period looked a lot like a lower case "i"). I'm sure anyone who knew him remembers this!

RIP Mr. Ness!

Mr. Ness and Mr. Harvey were our 2 athletic coaches at either Wooster Jr. High, Wilcoxson, or Bunnell High School where I graduated in 1969? Real nice guy but, his physical size was very imposing.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family. Mr Ness was the assistant principal at Stratford High School when I was a sophomore (1979). He played a huge role in my future, because he talked Mr Crawford (Principal) into not having me thrown out of the entire Stratford school system. The following year he became Principal and because of him I graduated with my class (1981) For that I am forever grateful. Thank you Mr. Ness.

This does not even touch the surface of Mr. Ness, my principal, while at Strafford high school, 1981 graduating class.

From time to time there appear on the face of the earth men of rare and consummate excellence, who dazzle us by their virtue, and whose outstanding qualities shed a stupendous light. Like those extraordinary stars of whose origins we are ignorant, and of whose fate, once they have vanished, we know even less, such men have neither forebears nor descendants: they are the whole of their race.
