Richard Scofield Obituary

Richard James Scofield Sr.
Captain Richard James Scofield, Sr., age 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Bridgeport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted and beloved husband of Charlene (DeBiase) Scofield. Born in Willimantic, CT on November 20, 1944, he was the son of the late Clarence and Shirley (Ireland) Scofield and was a longtime Shelton resident. Richard grew up in Westport where his interest in the ocean, boating and all things technical and nautical began. After graduating from Staples High School he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served during the Vietnam War. After his service, he put his technical skills to work as a mechanic at McDermott Chevrolet. His industriousness and determination led him to start his own business, Chestnut Hill Carting, which he successfully operated for over 45 years in Trumbull. During these years, he never lost his love for the water. Instead, it inspired him to start yet another successful business, The Coastal Charter Company, operating out of Captain's Cove Seaport in Bridgeport. Hard work, exemplary service and true compassion for people were not only the hallmarks of his businesses, but the heart and soul of the man himself. That was especially evident from the time he was president of the Booth Hill School Father's Club and founder of the Shelton High School Marching Band recycling fundraising program, right through his post retirement career as a Virgin Atlantic Airlines Trip Advisor where he garnered many accolades from the customers he served and the company itself. Above all his achievements, his greatest joy was his family and friends. A self taught carpenter with an abundance of creativity, he turned a small ranch home into a large, warm and welcoming place where everyone always gathered! A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend whose playful soul inspired smiles, and generous heart helped anyone in need. Richard will be greatly missed by all those who's life he touched. In addition to his beloved wife Charlene of 57 years, survivors include a loving daughter, Kerrie Scofield and her partner, Emily Humiston of Wilton, three cherished grandchildren, Dana and Jack Scofield of Wilton and Anthony Scofield of Milford, relatives Geri Scarpetti of Easton, Kathy and Gabe Falzarano of Stratford, Marge DeBiase of Bridgeport, Sonya DeBiase of Stratford, Richard, Jr's companion, Heidi Wilson of Milford along with troupes of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Richard James Scofield, Jr., sister Shirley Brightman and brothers-in-law Anthony DeBiase, Louis DeBiase and Robert Scarpetti, Sr.
Relatives and friends may greet the family on Friday, May 9th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. directly in St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton. Interment will be private.
