Richard Tunstall Obituary

Richard Louis Tunstall
Richard Louis Tunstall, age 81, of Trumbull, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Bridgeport Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen (O'Brien) Tunstall.
Born in St. Louis, MO, on November 18, 1943, he was a son of the late David P. and Catherine (Bigelow) Tunstall. Richard was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served honorably during the Vietnam War as a First Lieutenant. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and went on to enjoy a long career with IBM.
While in school, he was a gifted band member, playing both the flute and piccolo.
His faith was central to his life, evident in his service, leading a Bible study at Garner Correctional Institute through St. Catherine of Siena Church, where he was a devoted parishioner. He was also deeply proud of his decades-long volunteer work with Merton House in Bridgeport, where he logged hours over a 20-year span.
Dick loved all sports, but was especially passionate about tennis--and even played recently with his sons. He was also proud to have won his age group in the Nichols Jingle Bell Run in 2023.
In addition to his wife, Kathleen, with whom he shared 54 loving years, survivors include his children, David T. Tunstall and his wife, Kathryn, of Waxhaw, NC, Colin R. Tunstall and his wife, Philippine DeRichemont, of Biarritz, France and Sara K. Tunstall and her husband, Phil Frezzo, of Victor, ID. He is also survived by cherished grandchildren, Anna, Evie, Mae, Leah, Ombeline and Folger; his brothers, David Tunstall and his wife, Donna, of Raleigh, NC and Daniel Tunstall and his wife, Jo, of Chapel Hill, NC; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Shelton Rd., Trumbull. Interment with full military honors will follow in Nichols Village Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may greet the family on Saturday morning from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. We were friends and back door neighbors to the Tunstall family for a wonderful decade in Wilmette. Dick was the most kind and giving man we have known. He was a man of character and lived a life of dignity. We miss him terribly. Our deepest sympathies to Kathleen and the entire family.
