Robert George Johnson departed from this life on December 6, 2022, with his beloved wife of nearly 10 years, Dolores Mazzucco Johnson, by his side. Her extraordinary care for him reflected the bond of deep love, shared faith, abundant laughter, and comfort that he felt so lucky to have found in his wonderful life with her. Rob was born to Alice (O'Toole) and George Johnson on November 17, 1936 in Bridgeport, CT and spent a happy childhood on "Summit and Lindley" with siblings Lorraine and Don, and best friends Bob, Maureen, and Pat O'Connor. His stories paint a picture of a sunny, outgoing, humble boy who couldn't believe his fortune when tapped to star in the school play. Stories of his early life often ended with the phrase, "Oh, it was wonderful." Upon graduating from Central High School in Bridgeport in 1954, he studied at St. Thomas Seminary and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1958. He spent his career in the juvenile justice system, retiring as Supervisor of Probation Services for the juvenile court in New Haven. Throughout his life, Rob's love of God remained central to everything that he was. He shared his unwavering faith through generous acts and notably, through song-his booming baritone could be counted on to reach all the way to Heaven from any Mass or gathering. Rob was predeceased by his cherished first wife, Margaret "Peg" Moriarty Johnson, with whom he raised his two sons "Mike and Danny," the apples of his eye. He was predeceased this year by Patrick Moriarty, his brother-in-law and dear friend for six decades. He's survived by a small army of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, stretching from Wallingford to County Kerry, who felt celebrated and loved in his presence. A prayer book of Rob's offered a reading this week, the story of a young boy who was asked to memorize and recite Psalm 23. Haltingly the boy said, "The Lord...is...my shepherd...I shall...not...want. That's all you need to know." Rob would have loved this, for many reasons. And truly, that's all you need to know. Rob's family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford, on Friday (TODAY) from 4:00 - 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held directly at Most Holy Trinity Church, 84 North Colony Street, Wallingford on Saturday, December 10th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please honor Rob's love of children by contributing to the Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Holy Trinity School, 11 North Whittlesey Avenue, Wallingford, CT 06492; or to St. Martin de Porres Academy, 208 Columbus Ave., New Haven, CT 06519.
