Robert Macdonald Obituary

Robert William Macdonald
Born December 7, 1925, in Bandon Oregon, Bob lived until age 98 and passed away October 1st after a brief illness in Augusta, Maine. He was raised in Union, New Jersey, and his adult years were in Fairfield, Old Saybrook, and Madison Connecticut. He moved to assisted living in Waterville, ME in 2022.
He was a World War II Navy Veteran, assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Hospital as a Corpsman. His career included Schrafft's Ice Cream in NYC, Knudsens Dairy in North Haven, and Quality Food Oil in New Milford. Interests included woodworking, cars, boats and motorcycles, square dancing, nature walks, gardening, reading, classic movies and trips to Maine.
He was a charter member of Fairfield Grace Methodist Church, and a longtime member of the American Legion. He had a fun sense of humor- he asked that his obituary would state that he was an avid taxpayer. He often stated that his wish would be to ride a motorcycle off to the West at the end of his life.
He was predeceased by parents Theodore and Enid Macdonald and brother Ted, wife Jeanette of 60 years, second wife Ann, and son Kenneth Alan Sr.
He is survived by brother Gordon and his wife Carol, daughter and son in-law Karen Crane Macdonald and Geno Piacentini of Bridgeport., and son and daughter-in-law James Macdonald and Dorothy Royle Macdonald of Burnham,
Maine. Beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Kenneth Jr of Concord, NH, and his son Tristan; Ian Macdonald and wife Beth Ann of Bedford, IN, and their daughter Cora James; and Nettie Wood and husband Jackman Wood and their daughters Izola and Mable of Peaks Island Maine. He appreciated all of his cousins and nieces and nephews, and many friends throughout his journey of life.
He often thought of life choices and the "road not taken" (the "coincidences" that led him to his actual path) and reflected on his longevity by saying "I wanted to see how it all turns out!" Until his final days, he enjoyed reading the Connecticut Post and discussing the local news and events.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2025. Contributions may be made to the American Legion, Fairfield Post #74.

To the MacDonald Family, We are so sorry for your loss. He must have been a wonderful man, & taxpayer. My parents were both WWII veterans , and served in the US Marine Corps as well as American Legion members. I served in the USAir Force as a Nurse so I can appreciate the medical corpsmen- all great heroes. Mr. MacDonald's Navy service to this nation is appreciated. Sincerely,
Eileen B. (Torpey) Richard, Adjutant to American Legion Post 61
formerly 1 Lt. USAF, NC
