Rubin Kutno
Rubin (Rudy) Samuel Kutno, born in Brooklyn, NY, peacefully passed away after a brief illness on January 12, 2020. Raised in his beloved Brooklyn playing stick ball with boys who would remain lifetime friends, Rudy attended the Food Trades School in NY and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1944. After his service, he completed a course of study at the New York Institute of Dietetics. In 1951 Rudy married Gertrude (Gert) Herzig and moved to Bridgeport, CT, where they resided for the rest of their lives. Rubin continued his career in food service at H. L. Green Co. retiring in 1972, then opened his own luncheonette which he operated for the next decade. After this endeavor, Rudy continued to work for the Center for Financial Studies in Fairfield, CT until its closure in the early 1990s, when he then chose to work as a lunchroom aide for the Trumbull School System well into his eighties. In addition to a long tenure in the work force, Rubin was an active member of Shaare Torah Congregation until the time of its closing and of Loyalty Lodge of No. 58. He enjoyed a good cigar, a good poker or pinochle game shared with friends throughout his long life and continued to do so with fellow residents in Hollander House where he most recently resided. Rudy and Gert always believed that their family was the most important entity in their lives. He remained a devoted caregiver to his wife until her passing in 2011. Rudy especially savored surrounding himself with family and friends in CT, FL, and other locations, spending valuable time as much as possible. Rubin was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sylvia Goldstein, his brother Marvin Kutno, and his daughters Ilene Daniels and Karen Kutno Gherard. He is survived by his brothers Irving (Susan) Kutno of Sarasota, FL, and Ally (Sandra) Kutno of Delray Beach, FL. He also leaves his son Larry (Donna) Kutno of Brandon, FL, and grandson Jason of CA, son-in-law Bill Gherard of Trumbull, CT, and grandsons David (Julie) and Michael Gherard both of NY, and son-in-law Rich Daniels of Tallahassee, FL. Rudy was also fortunate to have many nieces and nephews and their families who remained active in his life throughout the years. Cherished memories of his subtle sense of humor, understated presence, and unquestionable love and care will keep him close always. A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later time.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Loyalty Cemetery, 172 Burroughs Rd., Fairfield. All attendees must wear a mask and maintain social distance. A live stream will be available at
