I have fond memories of Stephen from our days together at Yale Medical School and from our 5 year medical school reunion. He was a wonderful person who always greeted me with a smile despite the challenges of our days in medical school. He will be missed by his friends, patients, and colleagues.

It was an honor to have known Steve and to have called him a friend. He and I were residents together at Yale and almost all of my memories of him have him laughing. He was a fine gentleman and I'm sure his passing has left a huge hole. My family's prayers are with you.

I am yet another of the hundreds of people who came to know and love Steve, and life is very unfair to have taken Steve at such a young age. I had the utmost respect for his wisdom and medical skills, and he was never too busy to spend time with anybody who was with him. Peace, my friend. Charlie

To the Marshalko family - I cannot even begin to understand what a loss this is to you because as you have seen from grateful patients like me, Dr. M was someone you could always talk to, who would listen and always had a smile on his face. He saved my life a couple of years ago when I kept pushing to tell him something was not right. When he discovered the problem, he said, "I will always listen to you. And no matter where or when, if you need me, I'm there." That gave me and my family great comfort and I knew he meant every word. I always enjoyed our visits. We have lost a great representative of what the medical profession should be. My deepest condolences.

I just saw Doctor on Sept 14th, He was smiling as usual and I remarked How good he looked and said that he looked like he lost weight, he said he did and was working at losing more. He always was easy to talk to because I was not just treated as a patient, but also as a friend. I can't believe he's gone. Life is so unpredictable, I will miss him. I will Miss Doctor Marshalko, I will Miss Stephen.

Stephen was a brilliant doctor. Even though he was sure of himself, he was not arrogant. He always listened. We did not always agree with our respective views on medicine, but he treated me with respect and kindness. My prayers go out to his family. Stephen left us much too soon. He personified what a great doctor should be. Thank you Stephen.

... Another expression of sympathy and condolences from one of the legion of patients who can't believe that our wonderful Doctor Marshalko is gone.

He has and will continue to make a real difference in my life, as much from his friendship as his medical expertise, though both were huge, even in the few hours I spent in his presence.

May God give strength to his family, as well as the world of people that he so positively, and happily supported.

We are devastated this morning, having just learned of Dr. Marshalko's passing. Dr. Marshalko took such great care of my mother, going above and beyond in his role as her cardiologist. He listened to her carefully, attended to her so knowledgeably and tenderly, hugged her at the end of every appointment. Once when I accompanied her to an appointment at the time our son was applying to medical schools, I remember thinking, "THIS is the kind of doctor I hope our son becomes." His brilliance was only commensurate with his loving care. In my mother's words, said through tears this morning, "He was the perfect doctor."

Deepest condolences to his family; it's hard to fathom your unspeakable loss. I'm so, so sorry.

Sincerely and with gratitude,

Jennifer Elliott

September 22, 2016

It's been a long time since I had seen Stephen. I'm not sure when the last time was. It could have been at our 10 year high school reunion, or maybe at Yale during a Yale/Brown game our 1st year in college, or maybe it wasn't since high school. I'll never forget him. During high school, one big impression that he made on me was what a great family life he had. I don't recall doing much with him on the weekends, because it always seemed like he had some big family event to go to. I didn't have much family nearby, and I always thought, how much fun it would be to always be able to enjoy the company of relatives.

It's been more than 30 years, but I was thinking about him just this summer while visiting Washington DC. During the summer after our junior year, Stephen convinced me to go with him on a two week program to Washington DC at American University. This is something that I never would have done by myself. He said something about getting college credit, and how it might look good on our college applications, so I thought, why not? That experience made a lasting impression, not only from what I learned, but discovering that for me, as long as I have someone with whom to do something new, someone who will watch my back, I can do anything. I've followed that approach ever since, and it has served me well. It was because of what I learned and how much fun the program was, that I took my son this summer, to show him some of what we had experienced. We almost drove to American University, but didn't have the time.

On the program, I met a friend who is still a friend today who has been instrumental in helping me to dramatically improve my health. If it weren't for Stephen, my life would certainly be different. I always thought that someday I'd get a chance to see Stephen again and let him know, but with how busy life is, this just never happened.

Another fond memory that I have is how composed Stephen was when a group of classmates on our senior year Quebec trip re-arranged the furniture of the room in which Stephen, 2 other classmates, and I were staying. Upon entering the room, one of my classmates said, "Did we walk in the back door?" Stephen just smiled and laughed in that way that he does, and said, "What are you talking about? There is only one door!" What great composure, grounding, and a sense of humor he had!

My deepest sympathy to his wife, son, and family. To his son, I don't know how old you are, but I want you to know that your dad was always a rock solid friend. I could always count on him. If I ever needed help on something, he was always there. If I needed help with school work, a roommate on a field trip, a friend to talk to on the phone, he was always there to help. I am a better person for having had your father as a friend.

I have a few photos of Stephen from high school and from the American University 2 week program mentioned above. To Stephen's family, please send me email if you'd like the photos. In fact, if it weren't for that trip to Washington DC, I wouldn't have been inspired to buy a camera to have any of the photos that I have from high school.

Dr. MArshalko, I know you can hear me from heaven. I want to thank you for being such a good and kind doctor to my mother. From the time my mother was diagnosed with cancer I was never the same. Every day that went by I said, is this going to be the day I will loose her. You brought a smile to my mother's beautiful face and lessened her worries. For this, I will forever be greatfull to you. When my time comes and God is ready for me to go to heaven, I will give you a big Thank You Hug! Rest in peace, you deserve it.

Dear Lisa and Stephen,
Words can not be said that will remove your pain at this time. We learned of Stephen passing from Margaret Ann and then by text messaging from Caroline while I was in Hungary.

On behalf of my parents, Auntie Violet and Uncle Ernie as well as Caroline Lanzara and her family, we share in your loss and extend our deepest sympathy to you and your famiy. Knowing Stephen since he was born and then watching him grow up into a fine outstanding young man and sharing his accomplishments at Yale and then in his medical profession and attending your wedding, was something we will treasure. We also enjoyed your visits when you were able to come to Cleveland for a family gathering.

I only wish I would have paid a visit to you when I was in Fairfield, Connecticut last year. I learned that Weston was the neighboring community.

Our love and prayers to you and Stephen. May God be with you always.
Love Auntie Violet, Uncle Ernie and Cousin Richard Sarosi, part of your adopted Cleveland family.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Marshalko family. I grew up in Shaker Heights and had the privilege of sharing the grid iron with Dr. Marshalko. We knew his destiny would be great back in high school. His soft demeanor, brilliance and sharp wit was developed at a young age. He was confident about everything and everyone. Stephen as we knew him then had an uncanny ability to talk to anyone always making them feel at his level. He made us all comfortable with his infectious smile and wit. It was an honor to know him and am deeply saddened with his untimely loss.

Dr Marshalko was a wonderful, caring, good natured man. My mother and I just saw him maybe 2 weeks ago and he was always ready for a good laugh. A fun jab or seriousness when required. We all looked forward to our appointments with him. He treated both of my children, clearing them to play contact sports and seeing them as needed. And he treated my mother every six months. He could make anything he said come across as a gentle reminder not a lecture. That takes a true professional. Dr visits will never be the same. The world lost a gentle, truly kind and loving soul. But I feel blessed I had those few years of him treating my family. I trusted no one more and for me that's high praise indeed! (I'm the PIA in the family) my heart goes out to his family. You will all be in my prayers and thoughts during this difficult time. He was an amazing man. An amazing dr. But even more. An amazing human being. I'll miss his bow ties. And his easy laughter God bless you all.

Thank you Dr. Marchalko.

On May 30th, 2013, I was experiencing symptoms consistent with a heart attack. I was delivered to the hospital by a close family friend. After confirming that I was having a heart attack, the emergency department swiftly wheeled me to the cardiac team, which included the on call cardiologist, Dr. Stephen Marshalko. He was not part of my "cardiology team", and he and I had never met. He took charge like a field marshal, ensuring that all of his ducks were in a row prior to taking me into the cath lab for my second angioplasty in nine years. Since My wife works at Bridgeport Hospital, I asked that they let her know that I was there. Dr. Marshalko nearly threw her out of the room until he was informed that she was my wife In the cath lab, I joked with the team. I felt that I was in good hands, and wasn't overly concerned with what was going on. At one point, during the procedure, I asked the doctor if he had placed the stent yet. He said "no, do you want me to tell you when I do?" I said yes, and he obliged. Immediately, all of my symptoms disappeared. Without being overly dramatic, this man and his team saved my life that day. He checked in on me right after the procedure. He asked me a couple of questions, and was ready to move on to his next patient. When he got to the door I said, "hey doc, thanks." He paused and said "you're welcome." I would like to take this opportunity to express my most sincere condolences to the entire Marshalko family. This man truly made a difference. Thank you again Dr. Marshalko. By the way, my first and only grandchild was born one month prior to my heart attack. Thanks to Dr. Marshalko, I'm still here to love and enjoy her. I'm attaching her photo.

My deepest sympathies to the Marshalko family. I do not know if Mr. and Mrs, Marshalko will remember me. I grew up on Warwick just up the street. Stephen and I have been friends since we were young. Although I did not keep in touch with him and I will always deeply regret that. He taught me not to be afraid of roller coasters. We had many classes together. We played football together. He had a larger than life smile and an infectious laugh. He was always brilliant so it does not surprise me that he earned his PhD and MD from Yale. I am sure he was a brilliant cardiologist. I do not remember him ever raising his voice or even being angry. He was an exceptional person and it was my privilege to be his friend. Blake A. Dickson

Dear Lisa and Stephen Jr,
Words cannot express our heartfelt sorrow upon learning of Stephen's sudden death. It was always clear to us what a kind, warmhearted, loving and committed husband and father he was; always so proud of and eager to talk about his family, you could feel the love in his heart when he spoke of you both. He was also a true role-model in every sense of the word, Stephen wholeheartedly embodied what it is to live a meaningful and purposeful life, and his legacy will continue to live on ad infinitum. I hope you find strength and take comfort in knowing how much he was revered and beloved by everyone who was lucky enough to ever know him. He will be sadly missed by the entire Weston community and miles beyond.

I had the pleasure of calling on Dr Marshalko at Bpt Hospital as a vendor for the last 12 years, and while some doctors or nurses may run and hide from vendors, he was one of the most welcoming, friendly and genuinely nice customers I've had the privilege to work with. Never made anyone feel out of place, he took the time to ask about my family and share his many stories of baseball, family trips and work-related advice. So many times he shared his latest story about Stephen and said how proud he was of his son. He was a true gentleman and very well respected by so many for so many reasons. A great man who will be missed. My sincerest condolences to Lisa, Stephen and family for your loss.

My deepest sympathy to the Marshalko family.
I was a patient of Dr. Marshalko's. He was a very kind and caring Doctor with a nice sense of humor. When you left his office you always felt better than when you went in.
I am sorry for your loss.

Dr. Marshalko- What a blessing you were to so many. I feel honored to have worked with you. I will miss your great smile, loving spirit and sarcastic jokes. A void has been left for many, but your legacy will live on. You left us all way too soon and we are deeply saddened and offer up all condolences to your wife, son and extended family and friends. Rest In Heaven Dr. Marshalko. Gone from the body, but not from our spirit. Sleep in peace.

i cannot tell you how sorry my husband
and I are to hear of your husband's
passing away. In 2014 I was in ICU with
pneumonia and my heart went into afib.
Your husband saved my life. My husband
had surgery for clogged arteries last
year. Your husband saw my husband who
is now in the hospital on the 15th.
I cannot believe how shocked we are
to hear of his passing.
You and your family are in our prayers.
Sincerely, Pat & Tom Pechillo

Our deepest sympathies to Lisa and Stephen. As our sons played together on many baseball teams over the years, we had the pleasure of getting to know Stephen very well. He was a true gentleman, always kind and sincere, with a great sense of humor. Stephen would always offer positive encouragement to the players on the team. It was our good fortune to spend that time with him sitting in the bleachers, following the games and talking about his fishing trips in the Sound with Stephen Jr. A true loss for those who knew him, but we will always have the fondest memories of a wonderful man.

My deepest sympathy to the Marshalko family. My father has been a long time patient of his and looked forward to his visits with him. He and Dr. Marshalko would speak Hungarian and talk about their love of the food. He was a kind, friendly, caring man and will be deeply missed.

Dr. Marshalko was not only an excellent doctor, he was just the right person to talk to and get wonderful feedback of what he considered was the right course of action. He took care of my mother for a very long time.
We just visited him last week and what my mother loved the most was the effort that he always made to talk with her in Spanish.
You will be missed!
Our sincerest condolences to his family.

Steve, I don`t even know where to begin. My sadness as well as the rest of your Cath Lab family and hospital friends runs so deeply. You were and still are a friend, colleague, mentor, leader and fellow Met`s fan to many of us. Your having to leave us at such a young age is a tragedy. You will be forever missed my friend. I hope you rest knowing how much you were truly loved.
