Stephen Smolley
Newtown--Stephen Smolley, 92, entered into eternal rest on Oct. 30. He is the husband of the late Angela Molinaro Smolley. Steve was born in Ansonia to the late Theodore and Johanna (Pototeka) Smolley. A graduate of the Charles H. Pine High School in 1949 enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, graduated from Quinnipiac College, during his youth he was an excellent softball pitcher that would get him inducted into the National Hall of Fame for pitching Twenty years starting in 1945 leading the Norwood Athletic Club as well as teams in Derby, New Milford and Waterville. Steve accumulated a pitching record of 329 wins and only 58 loses. He highlighted his career with eight no hitters and put together forty-one consecutive innings of shutout ball. He defeated the 1955 World Champion Raybestos Cardinals, 2-0 and hurled the victory of 1966 to qualify for North Atlantic Regional Tournament. He was employed for 33 years as Vice President of the W. J. Megin Construction Co. leaving to become Vice President of the McKellan Insurance Group of Waterbury doing business in 46 of the 50 States.
He is survived by nieces and nephews as well as his best friend Frank and Olga Koskelowski as well as their daughters Elizabeth, Alexandria, Gabriella and son Frank III. Predeceased by sisters Rose Matuszewski, Pauline Culmo, Mary Matuszewski and Mildred Smolley Brothers John, Peter and Andrew.
Friends may visit on Friday from 9:30 till 10:10 a.m. in the Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia going to the Church of the Assumption for a mass of Christian Burial at 10:30. Burial will be alongside his wife in St. Rose Cemetery Newtown, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Assumption School or Yale Cancer Fund in care of the Funeral Home.
