Stewart Greenfield Obituary

Stewart H. Greenfield
July 19, 2023
Stewart H. Greenfield, 91, of Westport, Connecticut, passed away on July 19th, 2023, in Bridgeport Hospital. Stewart was born in Brooklyn to Milton and Gertrude Greenfield. He earned a bachelor's degree from Saint John's College in Annapolis, where he was an extremely loyal alumnus. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He worked at IBM and Sprout Ventures and then co-founded two investment businesses, Oak Investment Partners, where he worked from 1978 to 1994, and Alternative Investment Group, where he worked from 1996 to 2020, when he finally retired at age 88. He had a passionate love of birdwatching and hiking and a deep desire to make the world a better place. He served on the boards of St. John's College and the Santa Fe Institute and was an active donor and fundraiser for many educational, environmental, and human rights nonprofits as well as a significant contributor and fundraiser for Democratic politicians. The Connecticut League of Conservation Voters named him the 2017 Founders Award as a lifelong environmental champion. He was a former board leader of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, a Trustee Emeritus of The Nature Conservancy of Connecticut, and has served on the boards of Devil's Den and Earthplace, among many others. He helped start and fund several early climate technology investment funds and was a pioneer in making business more socially impactful and more equitable. At one point in the 1980s fifty percent of the female partners in the National Venture Capital Association worked for Oak Investment Partners.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Constance Greenfield, of Westport, Connecticut, his son, Matthew Greenfield and wife, Molly Jong-Fast, their children, Max, Beatrice, and Darwin, his daughter Joanna Greenfield, and his son, Roger Comora and his children Isabelle and Lucas, and his extended loving family. He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Gertrude and father, Milton, step-mother, Minerva, and deeply loved sister, brother, and nephew, Lesley, Michael, and Howard.
He was honored and respected and loved by many.
