Susan Berescik Obituary

Susan Jane Berescik
Susan Jane Berescik
"What would you like people to know about you?" was a question that often came from Susan "Sue" Berescik, 74, formerly of Trumbull, when she worked with her students on college essays. Her yearbook students at Trumbull High School would always hear a similar question, "what would you want to be remembered for?" Her lifelong passion of writing and working with youth to help them improve their own writing and show their true personalities was only seconded to her love of her family and friends. To Susan nothing was more important than her family and she spent her life dedicated to showing them love and support. She was the beloved wife of 52 years to Andrew G. Berescik and the mother to Andrew "Drew" Berescik IV and Tara (Burke) Berescik.
Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 9, 1947 to the late William Knechtel and Helen Burgers Knechtel, Susan is the oldest of their three daughters. She loved school and playing the piano and excelled at both. She met her future husband Andy, while in attendance at Miami of Ohio, graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in English Education, and immediately moved to Connecticut to be married and begin her new life. Susan began teaching in 1969 and continued to work within the Trumbull Public School System as an English teacher, homebound tutor, district news coordinator, and/or yearbook advisor until her retirement in 2010. She also served as a writer and editor for the Trumbull Times and other local newspapers. She dedicated her life to her students and considered them an extension of her family. Susan continued to work with business partner Shannon Barth on "Show, Don't Tell" through 2022 and has helped hundreds of students throughout the country show their best side through creative and engaging writing.
While writing was a passion, Susan also loved to embroider, make crafts, garden, and has a love for nature, especially hummingbirds. Travel has always been a love for Susan and Andy and upon their mutual retirement in 2010 they traveled the country together. Their journeys are chronicled through their blog -https://travelswithsuzi.blogspot.com/ and we invite all to follow the roadmap that they created. Susan began her final new journey on March 7, 2022 surrounded by her husband and children after battling cancer since 1998. She is survived by her husband Andrew, her son Drew, her daughter Tara, son-in-law, Michael Burke, sisters Carol Schoenberg of New Mexico and Jean Johnson of Illinois, sister-in-law, Dorothy (Berescik) Bizub of Huntington, CT and many wonderful friends and students throughout the country. When asked what she wanted to be remembered for she simply stated – Proud Mother, Loving Wife, True Friend and Accomplished Yearbook Advisor and Teacher.
In lieu of flowers, Susan and her family would like people to be kind and caring to each other and work to make the world a better place, just like Susan tried to do daily.
Friends and family are invited to attend her funeral services on Monday, March 14, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Rd., Trumbull, CT. with the Reverend Inkoo Chung officiating. Interment will be private.
Friends may call on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service.

I had the joy of getting to know Mrs. Berescik through Trillium over my four years at Trumbull High School. She left an indelible mark on my growth as a student and even my career.

The hours and hours I spent in the hole-in-the-wall known as the yearbook office would translate into a visual communications degree and an art direction/advertising career. It was Mrs. Beresick's work ethic and commitment (I do *not* use that term lightly) to her staff that I will never forget. She certainly treated us as her children and I thank Tara, Drew, and Andrew for sharing her with us. I know that wasn't always easy.

I will never forget her "Show Don't Tell" mindset which transcended college applications to be a life lesson. To this day, I still think about the value of how we show up and tell our stories-all because of her early impact in my life.

I am delighted to look at the blog of her retirement journeys. Thank you for sharing that! It makes me smile to know she finally did escape the cement walls of that tiny yearbook office to explore the wide open spaces of this world.

For her commitment, her love, and her spirit I will forever be grateful. I am proud to be called one of Mrs. Beresick's students, and I hope her family reads this and takes comfort in the fact that her spirit is indeed living on with all those she taught. We love you, Mrs. B!

Dear Berescik Family: I knew Sue through Hometown Publications (Trumbull Times, Monroe Courier, etc.), where she was a frequent and pleasant presence at the office. Sue offered many words of encouragement to all of us. Such a nice person, dedicated educator, and good writer and storyteller. She positively impacted so many people, especially youth. While our paths did not cross in more recent years, I'll always fondly remember Sue's upbeat personality. My thoughts are with you.

I am very sorry for your loss. Sue was a wonderful and dedicated colleague that left a lasting impression on me. I recall after her retirement, she was still a presence in many ways and it is really testament to her personhood and professionalism that I will always feel she is still "with us."

Our heartfelt sympathy, Andy, Tara, and Drew. Sue's family and mine lived 2 blocks apart in Mt. Prospect. Bill and Helen were the kindest parents. Sue and I survived Mrs. Dickinson's 6th grade and became close with our Honors English cohort. Even though we lived far apart as adults, we were close in spirit. Much love to you all.

Andy and family,
I'm so sorry for your loss, nothing I can write or say can ease the pain I know you're experiencing. Lean on your family and accept their support to get you through this this ordeal.

So sorry for your loss. Always remember Sue running from year book room to class when the year book room was off the Media Center at THS.
