Vasil Batsu Obituary

Vasil Batsu
Vasil "Chubby" Batsu, age 92, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Sandra Ghitsa Batsu, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Born and raised in New York City, he was the son of the late Christy and Rita Pittu Batsu.
Chubby moved to Bridgeport over 60 years ago, where he built a full and vibrant life. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and served his country in the United States Air Force stationed in England and Morocco. He pursued a career as a hairstylist and became the part-owner and operator of Maurice-Georges Beauty Salon in Westport, alongside his business partner, Angelo Minardi, until his retirement. During his retirement, Chubby found joy working at the front desk of the Wheeler Recreation Center at the University of Bridgeport, where he developed friendships with faculty and students alike. He was a devoted member of St. Dimitrie Orthodox Church, where he served on the Parish Council and was active in the St. Dimitrie Retirees Group. A true sun-worshiper, Chubby loved walking the beach at Seaside Park and spending summers in Cape Cod with his beloved wife. Chubby had a big personality, was a man of quick wit, always ready with a joke. He made every family holiday and special occasion memorable with his heartfelt, original poems. He was also an avid dog and animal lover.
In addition to Sandra, his loving wife of 60 years, he is survived by his daughter Lisa Giambazi and her husband Ted of Bridgeport, along with Ted's children: son Matthew (with his wife Ashley and family) and daughter Jaden; his son Christopher Batsu and his wife Adriana of Norwalk; and Adriana's son, Giovanni Rojas; his sister Cleopatra (Patricia) Varsani and her daughter Victoria; his brother-in-law Andrew Ghitsa; as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Victor Batsu, and his brother-in-law, Dr. Anton Varsani as well as several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dimitrie Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Rd., Easton, with burial to follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport. Friends may call at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements are in the care of the Frank Polke & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Dimitrie Orthodox Church.
