William Lee Obituary

William D. Lee Sr.
William D. Lee Sr., born November 5, 1923, was called to heaven on April 5, 2023, in his hundredth year of life at his home with family at his side. Bill was the only son of Fitzhugh and Lillian (Drew) Lee of Bridgeport, CT. He attended the Bridgeport Central High School, Class of 1942. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to the Army Corps of Engineers as a member of the combat engineer squad, making the way safe for the advance of friendly troops. Bill was most proud of his service in World War II and would recount his experiences in great detail. He participated in campaigns of Northern France and Germany and received a European-African-Middle Eastern theatre service medal with two bronze stars.
After his honorable discharge, Bill returned and married his high school sweetheart, Anne Lalley, and they moved to New Haven, where Bill attended Yale University School of Fine Art, graduating in 1950.
Bill was a true Renaissance man. His extraordinary talent shone in works of fine and architectural art that can be found throughout the area, including Fairfield University, University of Bridgeport, The Barnum Museum, as well as various public school and government buildings.
Bill's lifelong interest in history was an asset as he served as the Director of America's Bicentennial Celebration in Fairfield. This led to his position as Director of Fairfield's Historical Civic Center at the Burr Mansion. Bill loved working for the people of Fairfield, sharing the town's rich history and expertise of the Revolutionary War whenever the opportunity arose.
After retiring from the town, Bill was honored with the title Historian Emeritus. He moved to Trumbull where he continued to paint and pursue various creative endeavors, including building models of vintage warplanes. Bill was a friend to all, with a quick wit and warm smile. A favorite pastime was hiking in the Housatonic River Valley and at Great Hollow Lake in Monroe.
Bill was predeceased by his wife Anne, a daughter Barbara (George) and grandson Thomas (George). He is survived by his daughter Linda Carlson (Ted), daughter Patricia Rackliffe (John), and his son, William Jr. (Frances). He delighted in his ever-growing family of 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, April 11, at 10:30 AM meeting directly in St. Stephen Church, Trumbull. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, Fairfield with Military Honors. To send condolences, visit www.redgatehennessy.com

Bill Lee was a truly someone who knew every detail for the Town of Fairfield. He would love to share his knowledge with those who had the special chance to be in his fine company. May he be at peace. Special prayers for his family who have so many treasured memories.

Mr. Lee (Bill as he always insisted I call him) was truly one of a kind. I first met Bill through his granddaughter, Libby, who I worked with at CCDC for many years. When I purchased my first antique home back in 2002, Libby, said I MUST call her grandfather as "I'm sure he will know a lot about it" and he did. From that first meeting and many, many, more conversations, Bill and I found that we both had a passion for history and preservation. He was one of my first mentors who taught me, guided me and encouraged me when I decided to branch out and start my own company - CT House Histories. We loved to chat about my latest projects and about getting the Black Rock Fort site recognized by the state as a local historic landmark. He was so proud when the State Archaeologist, the State Geologist and the State Historian (among other dignitaries) all came to St. Mary's to investigate the site. That visit led to the State Archaeologist assigning it's Historic Resource Inventory #99 designating it a local historic site. Shortly thereafter Bill worked with the town of Bridgeport to have a sign erected nearby. It was something he had worked on for so long and I was so honored to help him achieve that dream. It was his pride and joy along with his beloved Sun Tavern. All of my special moments sharing a cup of tea at his home and chatting about everything historic is something I will forever cherish. He was a true gentleman, a true friend and just a wonderful person inside and out. I can still hear Libby tell me whenever she mentioned my name he would say "What a Gal"! All I can say is "WHAT A GUY! Thank you for sharing your life with me Mr. Lee. You will be dearly missed.
Hugs,
Melanie Marks

Bill was a great friend of my dad Jack Behn. They grew up together in Bridgeport and were life long friends. I have very fond memories of him and a painting he made of the Bridgeport kids sneaking off to swim naked watching trains go but! The last of the kids to pass. May he rest well with Anne
