William Powell Obituary

William Powell
August 15, 2023
William Joseph "Bill" Powell, 92, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2023, in Bridgeport, CT. He was born on February 3, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Joseph and Mabel Powell.
Bill was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served for two years from 1955-1957. He found great fulfillment in his military service, particularly during his time stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Bill's dedication and commitment to his country were evident throughout his life.
Bill's educational journey began at Gallistel School and at Bowen High School in Chicago before pursuing higher education at the Colorado School of Mines and Purdue University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Forestry. Bill began his career at the Northwest Paper Company, starting in testing and later transitioning to sales. His long career led him and his family to live in various places, including Cloquet and Brainerd, MN, Arlington Heights, IL, Decatur, GA, and finally settling in Trumbull, CT, in 1978.
In addition to his military and professional accomplishments, Bill was an active volunteer the with the Trumbull Veterans of Foreign Wars and at Nichols Methodist Church in Trumbull, CT. He found joy in various hobbies, including golf, traveling (especially cruising), and volunteering at Nichols Methodist Church. Bill also had a passion for reading, particularly books about military history and Chicago. He was an engaging and avid storyteller, often sharing tales of his adventures and European travels while serving in the Army in Heidelberg, Germany, as well as stories about the corrupt politicians and mobsters of Chicago in the 1920s. Bill's greatest pride and joy were his children and grandchildren. He cherished their accomplishments and actively supported their educational endeavors.
Bill is survived by his children, Brian Powell and his wife Denise of Seymour, CT, and Lynne Powell-Pinto and her husband Donald Pinto of Hull, MA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Kaitlin Powell, Joe Powell, Ann Marie Caiza and her husband Reuben Caiza of Seymour, Alexander Pinto and his wife Tova Teperow of Arlington, MA, Nicholas Pinto of Carbondale, CO, and Kiernan Pinto of Watertown, MA, as well as one great-grandchild, Avi Pinto of Arlington, MA. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Jean M. Powell.
A Memorial service and burial will take place on September 25, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Nichols Methodist Church in Trumbull, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) at 10 Mistywood Lane, Trumbull, CT 06611.
Bill Powell will be dearly missed by his loved ones and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be remembered as a dedicated veteran, a successful businessman, and, most importantly, a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

I'm sorry to hear Bill is no longer with us. I'm glad to know that he lived a happy, healthy and long life with strong support from his loving family. I will miss exchanging Christmas cards which we have done for decades and getting the annual update on his adventures. He took me to my first college football game which of course was Purdue. His brother Bob and my mother Annette would always have a ball with him, Jeanie and Mable, dining at local Chicago steakhouses when he was able to come to town while I had the babysitting duties for Brian and Lynn. It was a simpler time, a good time. Bill was a good man and I along with many others will miss him. May he rest in peace.
