William Bridge Stevenson

STEVENSON William Bridge Stevenson, age 93, formerly of Nichols, and Conway, S.C., died on Saturday, August 5, 2006 of natural causes at his residence in Potomac Falls, Va. Bill was born on September 25, 1912, in Boston. He graduated with bachelor's degrees from both Williams College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked for EI DuPont de Nemours as a chemist from 1936, including on the wartime Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago and Hanford, Washington, where he met his future wife, Jean Goodie. They married in 1948 and settled in Toledo and later in Connecticut. In 1953 he left DuPont to establish Stevenson Engineering in Stratford, with his brother-in-law, Lester Niederhauser. He remained president of the company until 1966. He worked for the Trumbull, Board of Education for 15 years until his retirement in the late 1980s. Bill was a life-long civic leader. He was involved with the Boy Scouts for more than 50 years, awarded the Silver Beaver in 1972. He served as president of the Nichols Improvement Association and as a volunteer at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut. He was a devout Episcopalian being appointed to the vestry of Trinity Church, Nichols, in many capacities for more than 30 years, including more than 20 years as Treasurer. He was a member of the Trumbull Town Council from 1966-70. Bill is survived by his children and their families, Gail Stevenson of South Burlington, Vt., William and Anne Marie Stevenson of Fairfax Station, Va., Laurie and Thomas Kelly of Annandale, Va., and Bradley and Martha Stevenson of Wilmington, Mass.; five grandchildren, Alexander, Katherine, Marina, William and Patrick; His wife of 48 years, Jean, died in 1996. Services will be held at Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, Va., and interment will be at Trinity Church, Nichols, at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of William B.
