Edgar M. "Sam" Salisbury, 81, passed away on Dec. 3, 2011, at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community.
He was the husband of Lydia A. Nulik, to whom he was married for more than 58 years.
Edgar was born in Newville, the son of Elizabeth Swartz and Edgar Salisbury on June 22, 1930.
He was a graduate of Newville High School. He then served in the U.S. Air Force until 1952 as a Korean War veteran stationed in Alaska.
He was a motor pool technician in the Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, he married and moved back to Pennsylvania, where he resumed his career.
He was a technician and service manager at Paviol's Garage, then a co-owner of Sam and Jerry's Garage from 1963-1986.
He was then an automotive technician at Ideal Motor Company until his retirement. He also worked at the North Middleton Parks and Recreation, helping groom the local parks. He was an avid hunter, loved to fish, and loved to cut wood.
He was also an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed riding with others.
He helped build a Taylorcraft plane and flew his 1946 Cessna until health issues prevented it. Flying, he said, brought him closer to God. It was always his dream to work on and fly planes, but he put that on hold until he raised a family.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder and trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia; his son Michael Salisbury and his wife Janice; two grandchildren, Alyson Horne and her husband Nathan Horne and Wesley Salisbury and his wife Tara; his daughter, Debra Paulson and her husband John; two grandchildren, Janice and Julia Paulson; and sister, Shirley Hefflefinger and her husband Clark.
A private burial will be held with military honors conducted by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 2A N. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA 17013; or Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
