Harold Zimmerman Obituary

Harold E. Zimmerman, 83, of Mechanicsburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at the Forest Park Health Center in Carlisle.

He was born July 15, 1922, in Mechanicsburg, a son of the late Merle R. and Della H. Devenney Zimmerman.

Along with his father, he operated the Western Auto Associate Store in Mechanicsburg from 1937 to 1976. He later retired from BMY in York. He was a graduate of Mechanicsburg High School Class of 1940. Harold was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. While in the Army Air Force he attended Haverford College.

He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg and was a 50-year member of Mechanicsburg American Legion Post 109. Harold was also an avid woodworker.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris L. Zimmerman, and two sons, Steven and Carl Zimmerman, all of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Donald R. Zimmerman of Delmar, Md.; three grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, with the Rev. Michael V. Minnix officiating. Burial will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 135 W. Simpson St., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 or to the Mechanicsburg Museum Association, 3 W. Allen St., Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.

My Deepest Sympathy to the family. I have known of Mr. Zimmerman when he had the store since I was a kid. My parents always shopped there and I did when I was older and the store was still open.
