Born April 24, 1920, in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late Ray M. and Mae G. Smethers.
Family members describe Mrs. Walp as a devoted wife and mother whose favorite holiday was the Fourth of July because she loved fireworks.
She was a member of Carlisle Area Newcomers Club and Greenfield Bridge Club and she participated in the AAUW Bridge Club of Carlisle.
A former resident of Washington, D.C., and Tucson, Ariz., she was a volunteer with the Elbert Gump School for Handicapped Children in Tucson, El Nino Children's Center in Tucson and the Junior Women's Club of Maryland. She was a founding member of the Tucson Opera Dames.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. William Robert Walp; a brother, Richard Smethers of Bloomsburg; three daughters, Susan W. French of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Cathy W. Askew of Atlanta, Ga., and Ellen W. Khoshkish of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Mrs. Walp is participating in the Human Gift Registry of Philadelphia.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church on the Square in Carlisle. A reception will follow at Carlisle Country Club on Harrisburg Pike in Middlesex Township.
Memorial donations may be made to any organization benefiting the mentally handicapped.
