John Sayler Obituary

John Elliott Sayler, Jr

November 20, 2024

John Elliot Sayler Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania died Wednesday, November 20, 2024. His life goes on eternally.

Born and raised in Warren, PA, he was the son of the late John E. Sayler, Sr. and Geraldine Parks Sayler. He is survived by his Uncle Andrew Popoff and his Aunt Nancy Parks Popoff, cousins L.D. Davidson, Lynne A. Davidson, Jenifer Davidson, Karen Popoff Pieters, and Bob Popoff. He is the uncle to six nieces and nephews Serena Davidson, Benjamin Davidson, Emilia Davidson, Elena Pieters, June Popoff, and Jillian Popoff.

John graduated valedictorian of his class of 1979 from Warren Area High School. He went on to Purdue University graduating Summa Cum Laude (B.S.C.E. and M.S.C.E. degrees). John was a professional civil engineer for many years, working out of offices in Tidioute, PA, New York City, and Mechanicsburg, PA; and later, began his own home design business. John's love for historical architecture is reflected in his designs of several buildings in the Mechanicsburg area.

John was very active in the Gettysburg Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America and was a long-time editor for The Gas Buggy Gazette, an antique car magazine, winning several awards for the quality of his publications. John also was an avid antique car collector himself.

John demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence and achievement in everything he pursued. He encouraged and inspired these attributes from all his family members, friends, and other members of the Christian Science community.

John's devotion to Christian Science was reflected in his leadership of the Chambersburg, PA church, where he led the services for many years.

At his request, there will be no funeral services. Family and friends will gather at a later date to pay respects and to honor the memory of John.

John was a good family friend when we moved into the same neighborhood in Warren, PA in 1969 as John and his mom and dad. He spent most of his time with my younger brother Ken, but he was friends with our entire family for many years. It was a shock when I heard of his passing, and he will be missed. I remember visiting John to go to the Antique Automobile Club of America at Hershey and enjoyed that time very much. He was very proud of the voice mail he received from Jay Leno discussing antique cars. Rest in peace John, and peace to the family.

This news was a shock. John was a good friend to all his associates in the AACA. He was there for me with good advice on several occasions. May the Lord Bless and keep John and his family at this difficult time.

John was a friend of many years and Karen and I always enjoyed the occasions when we wouldmeet. The discussions were always on old cars, a passion of both John and us. He was a fine photographer and had taken photos of several of our cars for us over the years. I will miss our friend with the knowledge he is now in a better place.

I am shocked and saddened by this news. John was a good friend of the Museum and was always willing to share one of his collection for an exhibit when asked. He was knowledgeable and incredibly generous, interesting and willing. I always looked forward to our interaction. It´s difficult to believe he´s gone. I will miss him a great deal.

To John's friends and family, I am very sorry to learn of his passing. Several times John and I met up with our antique cars and took them out to the country and took photos of them side by side. I met John's dad at the Hershey Car Show a few times as well. I am so sorry for your loss. John was a really nice guy!
