Col (Ret) M. Eugene Flenniken, DDS, 91, of Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the Thornwald Home.
He was born November 12, 1928 in Carmichaels to the late James Gordon and Edna M. (Critchfield) Flenniken.
Eugene was a 1946 graduate of Cumberland Township High School. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served two years. He then went to the University of Pittsburgh to continue his education. While at the University of Pittsburgh he joined the ROTC program. Eugene entered the US Army as a Captain and worked until he achieved the rank of Colonel before he retired from the service. During his service in the Army he went from Korea to Frankfurt to the Pentagon to Fort Dix to the Pentagon and finally to Carlisle Barracks. While at Carlisle Barracks, Eugene was in charge of opening and commanding the new dental clinic. After retiring from the Army in 1976, he owned and operated Flenniken Family Dentistry with his wife. Eugene was a former member of Carmichaels First Methodist Church, Carmichaels and a current member of Bethany Evangelical Church, Carlisle. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution Harris Ferry Chapter, Elks Lodge #578, and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Eugene is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ingeborg Flenniken, DDS, DMD; one son, Neil (wife Suzan, DDS) Flenniken of McLean, VA; one step-son, Michael (Nicole) Arnold of Frankfurt, Germany; one sister, Lou Ann (husband James) Martin of Spotsylvania, VA; two grandsons, Ryan and Matthew Flenniken; and one step-grandson, Karl Maximilian Arnold.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013 with Pastor Daniel Pratt officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, 3501 Terrace Street Pittsburgh, PA 15261.
