Russell Conway Obituary
Born June 11, 1925, in Charlevoix, Mich., to W. Sherman and Hazel (Heath) Conway, he graduated from East Jordan High School, Class of 1943, and was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving overseas. He fought in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the 95th Infantry Division. He was most proud of his Bronze Star and his Combat Infantryman Badge.
He returned to East Jordan, Mich., in 1945, and married Edith Bathke on May 11, 1946. He attended Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, Mich., from 1946 to 1950, earning a degree in secondary education and later a master's degree in school administration. Russ taught school for 25 years and was a high school principal for five years.
As a lay speaker, he was called on to conduct services more than 300 times in churches of 11 denominations in the area of Northern Michigan. He retired from teaching in 1980, and filled in as a pastor at the Levering United Methodist Church for eight months, and served as pastor at the Wolverine United Church of Christ for six years. Following that, he lived in Florida for eight years before moving to Carlisle in 1995.
Russ is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith; three children, Jeff (and wife, Leslie) of Carlisle, Jim (and wife, Shirley) of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; and daughter, Kelli (and husband, David) of Katy, Texas; a sister, Harriet Malone of South Lyon, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, John.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Middlesex United Methodist Church, 118 N. Middlesex Road, Carlisle, with the Rev. Jacob Waybright officiating. Interment will be held in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial service for Russ will be Saturday, Aug. 2, in Petoskey, Mich.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Middlesex United Methodist Church, 118 N. Middlesex Road, Carlisle PA 17013.
Arrangements entrusted to Auer Memorial Home and Cremation Services, Harrisburg.

It has been a very long time. We both admired Mr. Conway when he was teaching at Gaylord High School, Gaylord, Mi. We graduated in 1952. Our sympathy is with his wife and family.
