Shirley J. Sams

Shirley J. Sams, age 64, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Select Specialty Hospital, Harrisburg. Born July 7, 1949 in Idaho Falls, ID, she was a daughter of Howard and Vera (Jardine) Gilbert.

Shirley was a Master Gardener through the Penn State Extension, and worked with the Butterfly House at Hershey Gardens. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Carlisle Ward, Shirley served her church as a seminary teacher, music and chorus director and served as a volunteer with the Genealogy Library. She had been a passionate volunteer at the Kings Gap Environmental & Education Center and was an expert seamstress and excellent cook.

Shirley is survived by her children, David E. Sams, Steven L. Sams and Michael W. Sams all of Mechanicsburg, Jody M. White and husband David of Brunswick, MD and Kenneth C. Sams and wife Casey Cogdell stationed with the US Navy; five grandchildren, Thomas, Jane, Benjamin, Henry and Sylvia White; brothers Alan Gilbert and Bradley Gilbert of ID; and sisters Joyce Sylvester and Lois Baxter of ID.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley's memory to Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, 500 Kings Gap Rd., Carlisle, PA 17015.
