Carlsbad - Robert Jesse Higgins, 77, of Hidalgo Road Carlsbad, New Mexico passed away on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Robert was born on August 4, 1943, in Merkel, Texas to Henry and Wilma Higgins.

Cremation has taken place, and there are no services planned at this time.

Robert grew up in Merkel, TX and graduated from Merkel High School in 1961. He then married his first wife, Jil West in 1964. A year later they moved to Carlsbad in 1965. Robert went to work at IMC, where he worked for 34 years until retirement in 1999. He married his second wife, Melanie Lunsford in 1980. Together they lived in Malaga and farmed for 22 years before moving back to Carlsbad. The son and grandson of a blacksmith, Robert was the type of person who could do and fix anything. He loved farming, horses, hunting, fishing, and fixing things for people. Robert was very creative, and loved working in his shop. At one time, he was really into making knives, spurs and riding bits. The people he made these for cherish them and are still in awe of the remarkable craftmanship. Robert will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

Robert was preceded in death by his father, Henry (Si) Higgins; mother, Wilma (Bill) Higgins; two brothers: Del Higgins and Jerry Higgins.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Melanie Higgins of Carlsbad, NM; daughter Tami Higgins of Carlsbad, NM; daughter, Tara Spearman and husband, Damon of Carlsbad, NM; son, Steven Hawkins of Carlsbad, NM; son, Jayson Hawkins and wife, Jamie of Carlsbad, NM; four grandchildren: Hannah Spearman, Madeline Spearman, Carlee Macias, and Kendra Hurley and husband Hunter; brother, David Higgins of Merkel, TX; mother-in-law, Juanell Lunsford; sister-in-spirit, Linda McDonald; and numerous nieces, nephews, good friends and extended family.
