Lavern Coleman Obituary

Lavern F. Coleman, 86, of Burwell, Neb., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021 at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.

Lavern Franklin Coleman was born to Frank and Lela (Buckner) Coleman on Oct. 15, 1934, at Broken Bow.

He attended Upper Spring Creek School in rural Merna and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1952. While in high school, Vern played football, track and baseball.

Following high school he continued playing baseball with the Mid-Nebraska Night League, Junior Legion Baseball and softball until he was 18 years old. He also boxed Golden Gloves and was a boxing manager.

In 1956, Vern married Jane Gibson at Broken Bow. To this union three children were born - Rodney, Annette and Jeffrey.
Vern farmed and raised livestock on the West Table in the Merna area. He also drove a semi for Romans Motor Freight. Vern retired as a Technician with the Lower Loup Natural Resources District in 1996. While employed with the NRD, he planted over one millions trees in shelter belts.

In 1980, Vern and Marilyn Absalon were married at Chadron. The couple made their home on a farm outside of Burwell where Vern farmed and raised sheep.

Vern was an avid sports fan, especially the Husker football and volleyball, and enjoyed bowling. He was passionate about working the land, watching the crops grow, tractors and telling stories

Survivors include his wife Marilyn of Burwell; two sons Rodney Coleman of Lincoln and Jeffrey Coleman of Grand Island; daughter Annette Morse (Jeff Anderson) of Glenwood, Iowa; step-son Randy (Betty) Smith of Kearney; step-daughters Theresa (Pat) Fillinger of Grand Island and Catherine (Gary) Sydzyik of Aurora; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother Bill Coleman of Clovis, N.M.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dennis and Verna Absalon of Crawford; and two sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law Joan and Tom Geardino of Malcolm and Jean and Jake Shulo of Ralston.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 12 p.m. until service time on Saturday.

Memorials are suggested to Burwell Volunteer Fire Department or the Donor's Choice. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

I am so sorry to read about Laverne´s passing. I enjoyed his friendship when I worked for the Lower Loup NRD and SCS in Burwell. He was a great person. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Marilyn, and his entire families! May God fill your hearts with happy memories of Lavern. With deepest sympathy, Cindy.

So sorry to here of Vern’s passing. I planted many trees with him over the years and the stories he would tell. Never a dull moment when he was around! He will be missed!!

I have a lot of wonderful memories of waiting on Vern and Marilyn when they would come into The Branding Iron. He called me Cactus (inside joke). Vern always had a smile and a joke to share. He was a special man. May God be with you in your time of loss.
