Michael Smith Obituary

On Sunday, Nov. 7, 2021, Michael J. Smith, 71, passed away peacefully in Spokane, Wash. after a long struggle with cancer with his long-time partner, Sandy Fish, at his bedside.

Mike was born Nov. 27, 1949 in Newton, Iowa to John and Dorothy (Weber) Smith. Mike was their second child and first of eight sons.

He graduated from Broken Bow High School in Broken Bow, Neb. in 1968.

In 1970 Mike spent a tour of duty in Viet Nam with the Army, not by choice, but by draft.

Mike was stubborn, independent and insisted on doing things his own way. He loved the spirit of adventure and upon his discharge from the Army, Mike spent the next decade working on the Alaskan Pipeline in the summers and wintering in Jamaica or Hawaii.

His passion from that point forward was working along-side Sandy to constantly improve their home and property located on the south face of Jumpoff Joe mountain in Stevens County, Wash.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy, and two brothers, David and Daniel.

Mike is survived by seven sisters and brothers Cathy (Brainard), Patrick, Mark, Scott, Thomas, Teres (Foster) and Timothy; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike's preference was that you send memorials to your favorite charity.
