Edith Morris Obituary

Edith H. Morris, 81, passed away on September 21, 2025, in Charlottesville, Virginia, of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Edith was born and raised in Birmingham Alabama, the daughter of Roberta and William Henderson and the younger sister of Sterrett Henderson. She moved to the city of New Orleans with her husband Joe in 1968. There she became an elementary school teacher, taught English as a second language, and directed Christian education at Trinity Episcopal Church. At age 38, she summoned her hallmark courage and enrolled in law school at Loyola University New Orleans. To no surprise, she graduated with honors and served on the law review. She became an accomplished family lawyer known for her integrity and humanity. She was proud to be at the forefront of the collaborative law movement, and she received awards for her adoption work, her professionalism, and her steadfast commitment to pro bono work. Edith loved and lived fully. She made lifelong friends wherever she went. She brought warmth, curiosity, and groundedness to all her endeavors, be it her Thursday morning breakfast group of 30+ years, lessons at Uptown Boxing, yoga practice at Freret Street Yoga and Longue Vue Gardens, her centering prayer group, volunteering for any number of good causes including Ubuntu Village, or regular Sunday breakfast with Joe at the Bear Cat Cafe. She loved nature, and she relished rowing to the middle of Lake Rosemound to read a good book. When she could no longer row, she savored a cup of coffee overlooking her gardens each morning. She took great delight in family vacations in the mountains of Highlands, NC. Edith leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Joe; her children Rob and Diddy; and her grandchildren John and David. She had a second family in Morris, Lee, Bayle & Willis: Bernie, Donna, Sheila, Suzanne, and T. She was their North Star and will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank Mary Brand James of Hospice of the Piedmont, and the entire team at Hospice House, for their extraordinary care and grace. In lieu of flowers, please honor Edith by contributing your talents or making a financial donation to the charity of your choice.

Edith was one of a kind. A generous friend and one who invited us to think, take chances, enjoy a little adventure, and above all, have fun. She was a joy!
