Margaret Coursey Obituary
Margaret Ann Coursey was born in Avoca, Pennsylvania on September 2, 1939, to Charles A. Gildea and Chloe M. Davis Gildea as the youngest of nine children. She passed peacefully to be with the Lord on September 10, 2025, at her daughter's home in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounded by her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Chloe Gildea; her brothers Leonard, William, John, Francis, Robert, Joseph, and James; and her sister Marie Yale. She is survived by her husband of almost 62 years Gary Coursey of Berryville, Virginia; her daughter Cheryl Coursey and her husband George Logan of Charlottesville, Virginia; her granddaughter Bailey Logan of Charlottesville, Virgina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret was a proud 1958 graduate of Technical High School in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where she completed a commercial business degree. Upon graduation, she worked for Dean Phipps in its main business office. She met her husband Gary while he was stationed in Tobyhanna during his time in the Army, and they later married on November 23, 1963. During their long marriage, they loved each other dearly and took care of one another in their own dedicated ways. They enjoyed traveling and saw most of the country while driving out west to visit family, collecting many unique souvenirs along the way. In 1965, they had their only daughter Cheryl, whom they cherished and were very proud of. In the 70s, Margaret was active in establishing the Ladies Auxiliary of the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department. She was also an ardent Catholic, and attended Sacred Heart Church in Winchester, Virginia, after moving to the area. For many years, she lovingly and dutifully cared for her mother Chloe until her passing. Margaret loved Frankie Valli, Patsy Cline, polkas, and musicals, but her greatest joy was being a grandparent. She loved celebrating friends and family, and never missed a chance to call on a birthday or celebrate a holiday. The week before her passing she celebrated her 86th birthday where she got to enjoy her favorite cake and join in singing happy birthday.
The family wishes to thank her doctor of many years, Dr. Christine Aiello for her dedicated care as well as the people who helped care for her from Commonwise Home Care and Hospice of the Piedmont.
A funeral service is planned for Thursday, September 25, at 2pm at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Virginia, officiated by Reverend Robert Lewis. Internment will be at Shenandoah Memorial Park in Winchester, Virginia, on Friday, September 26, at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911.
