Margaret Grove Obituary

Margaret Price McLaughlin Grove was born on August 26, 1930, in Bristol, Virginia and died January 12, 2025, in Charlottesville, Virginia surrounded by loved ones. She was the daughter of the late Fanny McCaa and John C. B. McLaughlin, and the wife of the late James Weldon Grove. Margaret and Jim were married in Charlottesville in 1954 and returned to live there in 1956. Devoted members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, they were active in many community organizations. They were founding members and served on the boards of the National Alliance of Mental Illness-Blue Ridge Family Alliance and Friends of Blue Ridge House. Margaret was a proud graduate of Mary Baldwin College. She was on the college's administrative staff for two years and served several terms on the Alumnae Board. Most recently her alma mater gave her its Kelly Leadership Award, which recognizes alumni who have demonstrated outstanding service and leadership to the university. She worked in several administrative capacities for more than 20 years at St. Anne's-Belfield School, where she was given the Headmaster's Award as well as the Alumni Service Award. She was a member of the Charlottesville Garden Club, Contemporary Club of Albemarle, Junior League and The Center. Serving as a docent at the Bayly Art Museum (now Fralin), she took an active part in local arts and music events. Margaret loved her family and friends in a way that made each person feel special. Her effervescent charm, fun-loving spirit, and inability to be a stranger to anyone she met, brought people of all ages together. She met challenges with grace, humor, and backbone. Margaret was an inspiration to all who knew her. Margaret is survived by her son, John McLaughlin Grove; and his wife, Katharine Saunders Grove, of Needham, Massachusetts; and their children Anna and Charles Bateman. She is also survived by special "daughters," Lindsay Mead Lowdon, Jenny Mead, and Chris Shaw, several nieces, nephews, many cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Weldon Grove, her precious daughter, Mary-Moore Grove; an infant son; her devoted sister Addie-Noble Ours; her husband George; and her much-loved brother William Lowndes McLaughlin and his wife Nancy. Her family is grateful to The Colonnades, where she had a happy home for the last seven years, and the Hospice of the Piedmont. Details on a memorial service will be forthcoming. Interment will be private in the memorial garden at her church. Hill & Wood is managing funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may consider a donation to the Botanical Garden of the Piedmont or to a charity of your choice.

Dear John and family,

I´m very sorry about the passing of your mother. She was one-of-a-kind! My mother adored her, and they had lots of fun together playing tennis and different activities over the years. She was always upbeat and funny - a ray of sunshine. I know you will miss her greatly.

Mrs. Grove or "Mrs. Groovy" as she was sometimes called was my Madam for Madam Day one year. I had lots of silly hints and we had a special bond thereafter. One of my favorite memories was when Ann Holland (a famous Latin Teacher) in the 1980s was on TV being interviewed. Mrs. "Groovy" called in (while we were all watching in the library) and asked something along the lines of "how is it that you are such an amazing wife/mother/teacher and manage look so pretty every day and be so nice?" Ann knew exactly who it was (especially with that signature voice). Margaret was a character! We exchanged Christmas cards every year and talked on the phone occasionally and she was always interested to hear about my mother who had graduated from Mary Baldwin like her. She will be missed!

Margaret was my mother´s very good friend and I also felt the light of her love. She was a special individual indeed and her fun loving ways always made me laugh! Any human she touched is better off for having known her. Mom (Vivien Johnson) and I believe that Margaret is everywhere now and her love is showering us all.

The last time I saw Margaret, she had organized a get together at the Colonades with my mother, Ellen Eckford, Betty Middleditch and Cora Pitts. We were all so happy to see each other. Margaret seemed as vibrant as ever; she had such a welcoming smile and was full of energy. Margaret gave me a tour of artwork by family members. Paintings by John and her sister. In the not so distant past, I was amazed at all the traveling that Margaret and Betty Cauthen did. Always learning and trying new things.
In my younger days, I remember going to a wonderful block party in Margaret's neighborhood. My brother was in a band at the time and they played. There was an art show and Ted Turner picked the winner. I think it was Sarah Hereford for a paper mache penguin. It was a privilege to know Margaret Grove. She will be missed.

Mrs. Grove (I was a STAB kid), was such a positive and warm person that knew how to brighten up a day! Her loss will be felt by those that knew her, as she kept that amazing spirit of positivity for as long as I have known her! Thank you for your guidance as a kid and your friendship as an adult! Ren

Dear John,
Michael and I are so sad to learn that your mother has passed away. We feel so fortunate to have known Margaret and have so many fond memories of her. She was always cheerful, kind and so witty. She would light up a room. When, as a counselor at STAB summer camp, I backed the STAB van into the drama teacher's car, she tried to be stern with me, but I could see she was amused by the situation. She reassured me that all would be well and suggested that I ask Doug Tarring to coach me on how to operate the van on the steep hill outside of the lower school gym! She was so kind and supportive when Michael joined Anderson Strudwick and he adored her. We are truly going to miss her. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Fondly, Kathryn & Michael Cross

Margaret remained active in the Fralin Book Group when we offered it on zoom...remaining curious and contemplative both...contributing anecdotes about her family's ties to the Phillips Collection founders...she came with her driver to deliver her special pecans and a thank you note each Christmas that she was mobile...she was a bright spot in my life and I will miss her....
